ME2200 2022 Assignment 3

This document contains an assignment for a materials and design course. It includes 8 questions related to mechanical engineering concepts like tensile testing data for magnesium, slip systems in crystal structures, dislocation movement, dislocation annihilation, Burgers vectors, critical resolved shear stress, and yield points. Students are asked to analyze data, make calculations, draw figures, and determine stresses and times required for various phenomena involving dislocations and material properties.

Materials and Design (ME2200)
Date: 05-Feb-2022 Assignment - 3 Maximum Marks: 15

1. Make suitable assumptions where necessary.

2. Refer to text books or material data handbooks for properties that are not given.

1. The following data were obtained during tensile tests on Magnesium single crystal at 2
room temperature.

Table 1: Tensile test data on Mg single crystal.

ϕ(°) λ (°) Tensile Yield Strength (MPa)
82 11 2.77
63 36 1.07
52 41 0.83
35 55 0.69
27 63 1.02
14 77 1.78

Confirm the validity of Schmid’s law for Magnesium and determine τCRSS for this material.

2. Figure 1 shows the representation of slip systems in a FCC unit cell. Draw schematically 1
similar figure for slip systems in simple cubic unit cell and give justification for your
answer.

Figure 1: (a) A {111} < 110 > slip system of a FCC unit cell. (b) The slip system that
describes the (111) plane and three slip directions showing three possible slip systems.

3. A pure right-handed screw dislocation is shown in a crystal in Figure 2. The dislocation 1
is made to glide, first in Plane 1, next in Plane 2, then in Plane 3, and finally in Plane 4,
such that the dislocation returns to the initial position. Describe what happens to the
shape of the crystal when the dislocation traverses that path 150 times. The dislocation
can take such a path by cross-slipping from one crystallographic plane to another.

4. Two infinitely long straight edge dislocations of opposite sign on the same slip plane are 3
initially separated along the x-axis by a distance of 2s. Assuming that the glide velocity
of each dislocation can be described by

µb2
vx = −M ,
4π(1 − ν)x

where M is a constant that describes the glide mobility. Derive an expression for the
time, tc , required for the dislocations to annihilate.

5. Determine the magnitudes of the Burgers vectors for Aluminium and Chromium. 2

6. A single crystal of a metal that has the FCC crystal structure is oriented such that a 2
tensile stress is applied parallel to the [110] direction. If the critical resolved shear stress
for this material is 1.75 MPa, calculate the magnitude(s) of applied stress(es) necessary to
cause the slip to occur on the (111) plane in each of the [11̄0] , [101̄] and [011̄] directions.

7. The lower yield point for iron that has an average grain diameter of 5 × 10−2 mm is 2
135 MPa. At a grain diameter of 8 × 10−3 mm, the yield point increases to 260 MPa. At
what grain diameter will the lower yield point be 205 MPa?

Assignment - 3 Submission Due: 12-Feb-2022 ME2200

8. Consider a metal single crystal oriented such that the normal to the slip plane and the 2
slip direction are at angles of 43.1° and 47.9°, respectively, with the tensile axis. If the
critical resolved shear stress is 20.7 MPa, will an applied stress of 45 MPa cause the single
crystal to yield? If not, what stress will be necessary?
