ALGEBRA

a generalization of arithmetic

Al-Khwarizmi
Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa
al-Khwarizmi lived in Baghdad,
around 780 to 850 CE (or AD). He
was one of the first to write about
algebra (using words, not letters).
► Around 825 he wrote the book
“Hisab Al-jabr w’al- muqabal”,
from which we get the word
Algebra ( meaning “restoration of
broken parts”).This book included
may word problems , especially
dealing with inheritance

Difference Between Algebraic expression
and Numerical expression
Algebraic expression – is an expression which is made up of variables and
constant , along with algebraic operations ( addition , subtraction .. And etc)

Numerical Expression – involving only numbers and one or more operations


symbols.

Difference between Expression and
Equation

Expression – is a mathematical
phrase which combines , numbers ,
variables and operators to show
value of something
Ex. 7x -2
Equation – mathematical statement
where in two expressions are set
equal to each other

Example : 7x + 5 = 15
Expanded Form

is a way to write a
number by adding the
value of its digits.
