Elements to be Observed in Planting Trees and Fruit-Bearing Trees

Market Demands for Fruits, Orchard Farms in the Country

Introduction
Modern farming technology is used to improve the wide types of production practices
employed by farmers. These innovations in agriculture help the farmers make their livelihood
more profitable, efficient, safer and environment friendly.

Learning Competencies (Essential Competencies)

Uses technology in the conduct of survey to find out the elements to be observed in
planting trees and fruit-bearing trees, market demands for fruits and famous orchard farms in
the country

Objectives

TLE6AG-0b-2 Uses technology in the conduct of survey to find out the following:
2.1 elements to be observed in planting trees and fruit-bearing trees;
2.2 market demands for fruits; and
2.3 orchard farms in the country.

Let’s Recall (Review)

Directions: Read each statement and write T if the statement is true and F if it is false. Write
your answer on a separate sheet of paper.

____________1. Trees release oxygen that every animal needs to breathe.

____________2. Reproduction and propagation of non-bearing and fruit-bearing trees have
many benefits and importance.
____________3. Fruit-bearing trees bear fruit that is consumed or used by humans and some
animals.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

A. Factors to in considered in planting trees
1. Location – Choose the best place for planting. Trees and fruit trees require more space
for growth than ornamental plants or crops. Trees and fruit trees grow tall and wide.
There are trees that have roots that expand sideward and those that move downward.
2. Seeds – Choose the seeds that best suit. Seeds are of good quality, healthy, mature with no
blemishes or cuts and are of the right size and form . Seeds must be prepared before planting.
Planting should be done preferably during the rainy season.

1
3. Soil – Put sufficient fertilizers on the soil before planting It is advisable to prepare the
soil before planting by cleaning the soil and its surrounding area and mixing the soil with
organic fertilizers.
4. Removing weeds – Take care of the soil and plants regularly. Caring for the young trees
means removing grass and weeds around them so they do not compete in getting the
nutrients from the soil. Keeping the soil always moist is not a problem during the rainy
season.
B. Market Demands of Fruits
Marketing is important to all farm enterprises, regardless of size. Some farmers, such
as cash grain farmers or dairy farmers, have large and well-established markets. They can use
existing organizations to perform the marketing function for them, or they can band together,
form a cooperative, and market their products jointly. Small scale fruit and vegetable growers
generally have more difficulty finding established markets; therefore, they usually develop
marketing systems tailored to their unique situation.
Major Markets
Fruits and vegetables are produced seasonally, but the market requires product throughout the
year. For decades, It has become a practice to match product availability with consumer demand by
a. Selling fresh products during harvest and shortly thereafter
b. Processing the rest to meet demand during the rest of the year.
As technology improved and consumer incomes increased, it became possible to provide
fresh produce year-round.
Fresh markets increase consumer incomes and year-round demand for fresh produce
force retailers or their representatives to established buying points in different growing areas.
As a small-scale fresh fruit and vegetable grower, you may consider selling directly to
retailers.
Processing Market must keep unit costs low to stay competitive.
Evaluating market demands larger growers, particularly those located in major
production areas, can pursue either of the two traditional marketing alternatives.
Harvesting Fruits
Harvesting is picking fruits in their season when they are ready to be sold or eaten.
Harvesting is done at different seasons depending on the characteristics of each product.
Generally, fruits are picked when they are mature enough. Fruits should reach the market in
good condition.
1. Mangoes, bananas, and papayas are harvested before they ripen. They should be green
and matured.
2. Pomelos and chicos should be picked at the right size and maturity.
3. Native oranges or dalandan are picked while green. They eventually ripen.

The right time to harvest depends on the following factors:

1. Price of fruits on the market– The beginning of harvest season of any fruit
commands the highest price in the market. This is because the fruits are new in the
market and are not as abundant as when they are in the peak of harvest season.
2. Distance of the farm to the market – Transportation comprises a big expenditure in
marketing the products. The farther the farm is to the market, the higher the transport

2
cost. Likewise, the rate of ripening and deterioration may be affected by the length of
time it takes for the product to reach the market.
3. Period of storage of harvested fruits before bringing them to the market – Longer
storage means higher risk for fruits to deteriorate. When products become over ripe and close
to deteriorating, they cannot be sold at a higher price compared to when they are fresh and at
the right degree of maturity and ripeness.
Storing the Products
Proper storage of harvest is very important to keep them in good condition. Most fruits
when ripened are perishable so they rot or decay easily. Therefore, they should be used or sold
while still slightly ripe and firm.

Tips in Storing Fruits

1. Use a wicker basket for storage as the holes provide cool air and will slower ripening
of the fruits.in storing fruits. This will prevent the fruits from ripening fast because the
holes in the wicker basket will provide fruits with cool air.
2. Use a durable and clean wicker basket for handling.
3. Classify the fruits depending on the ripeness, size, and shape before placing them in the
wicker basket. Separate the ripe from the unripe ones.
4. Place the heavy and unripe fruits such as papaya, mangoes, and pineapple at the base
and place the lighter and riper ones at the top.
5. Store in a cool, dry, and clean place that is free from ants, cockroaches and other
harmful insects.
6. When placing the fruits in the boxes or wicker baskets, handle them carefully to avoid
bruises.
7. Always remember, that better products could be sold for higher prices.

To ensure success in selling fruits, the farmer or seller should consider the following market
demands:
1. Buyers select fruits and other products of good quality that is based on freshness, size,
shape, and appearance and that the sellers could command higher prices.
2. Pack fruits properly in food containers to maintain freshness and avoid cuts, bruises
and blemishes
3. Price your products based on the current price on the market to make product
competitive. Generally, when products are sold during the peak season, if your products
are of superior quality, you can demand a higher price. Many consumers to pay a higher
price if they feel they are getting their money’s worth.

Ways of Marketing a Product

1. Retail- refers to the sale of goods in small quantities directly to the consumer. This is
better for farmers to earn more profit
2. Wholesale- This is the sale of goods in a relatively large quantity to be retailed by
others. Selling by wholesale is advantageous over the retail method because the
producer has a sure market for his products.
3. Consignment basis- This is an agreement to supply goods for a definite price and at a
specific time.
4. Announcement of products to the public.
5. Direct selling to the marketplace.
6. Selling through cooperatives.

Marketing through cooperatives is the newest practice. Farmers from cooperatives to earn
higher profits, while consumers get the product at a lower price.
