GR X Surface Area and Volume Efficiency in Packing 1

The document discusses optimizing costs by efficiently packing bakery products into boxes. Students are tasked with evaluating packing efficiencies of different shaped objects, packing objects in different arrangements to determine the most efficient method, and presenting findings on packing efficiency, surface area to volume ratios, and a conclusion on considering surface area for product packaging.

ACTIVITY- EFFICIENCY IN PACKING

Objective
You and your partner run a bakery. You would like to optimize the cost of packing the various
bakery products.

Task Description
● Evaluate the efficiencies of packing objects of different shapes in a cuboid box(E.g
cube, sphere, cylinder, etc.). Efficiency is the percentage of box space occupied by the
object.
● Take a certain number of identically shaped objects and pack them in a cuboid
container.
● Compare and determine the most efficient method of packing the objects. (E.g. Square
packing, Hexagonal packing). Compare at least 2 types of arrangements.
Refer: Calculating packing efficiency

● For any given paperboard container, a surface area to volume ratio, or SA: V, can be
determined by dividing the surface area of the material by the volume inside the
container. This number tells us how efficiently the package uses the material to contain
the volume inside.
● Present your findings and conclusion in the documentation format given below.

Conclusion :

When a company is deciding on packaging for a product, why should the surface area
of the packaging also be considered?
