Movable Bridge

Introduction
A (fictive) Maritime Facilities Operator (MFO, client, represented by your professor) requests
from your interdisciplinary engineering team the conceptual design of a replacement for the
existing bridge at Sharq Marina (Figure 1) with a movable bridge that allows larger sailing vessels
to pass through after opening the bridge deck.

energy consumption
3.4. Safety Analysis
3.5. Technical drawings of design ideas
3.6. Detailed technical drawings of selected design idea
3.7. Description of innovation in the design approach
3.8. Sustainability considerations
3.9. Description of the anticipated building process, including required material, tools and
equipment, and human resources
3.10. Project Management documentation of selected design idea, including:
3.10.1. Work Breakdown Structure
3.10.2. Responsibility Matrix for design phase (i.e. responsibilities within your team)
3.10.3. Cost estimation and budget
3.10.4. Scheduling of tasks related to building the movable bridge, including critical path
and milestones (Gantt Chart, using MS Project or Primavera)
3.10.5. Risk Assessment

Learning Outcomes
This project supports developing the following learning outcomes:
1. Understand the role of a professional engineer within a business environment.
2. Select materials and processes for engineering applications and justify decisions made.
3. Apply information literacy skills and information technology skills to engineering projects.
4. Utilize simulation tools in project execution.
5. Apply risk assessment and workplace health and safety in engineering activities.
6. Conduct practical activities.
7. Understand the complex nature of engineering activities, including ill-defined situations
and problems involving uncertainty, imprecise information, and conflicting technical and
non-technical factors.
8. Demonstrate personal application and development of the practice of professional
engineering, including a professional attitude, professional communication, problem
solving skills, relevant technical knowledge, productive work practices and a commitment
to lifelong learning.

Project Submissions
The client requires three submissions based on the deadlines according to your course outline:
1. Individual Technical Drawing representing the individual design idea of each team
member.
2. Presentation Video, max. 6 minutes, professional style, showing how team members
worked and came up with the most suitable solution (all team members have to
participate). Selected videos might be shown on ACK campus screen.
3. Technical Design Report (one per team).
