Functions
Important Terms
RELATION
This term refers to the pairing or
correspondence between two
quantities.
DOMAIN
This is the set of all first elements of
ordered pairs. (X)

RANGE
It is the set of all second elements of
ordered pairs. (Y)
IMPLIED DOMAIN

It is the set of all real numbers

for which the equation
produces real numbers.

y
Relation
ONE-TO-ONE
This pertains to the relationship of an
element in the domain that is paired
exactly with one element in the range.
( 1,2 ) (3,4) (5,6) (7, 8)

(2,4 ) (3,6) (5,9) (10,15)

x 1 2 3 4
y 5 6 7 8
ONE-TO-MANY
It is the relationship wherein one element
in the domain is paired with at least two
elements in the range.
( 1,6) (1,7) (1,9) (1,11) (1,13)

(2,3) (2,5) (3,8) (3,9)

y 12 14 16 17
MANY-TO-ONE
This refers to a relationship wherein at
least two elements in the domain pair
with one element in the range

FUNCTION
It is the relation between a set of inputs
and a set of permissible outputs with the
property that each input is related to
exactly one output. When x value is not
repeated.
LINEAR FUNCTION
This is described as f(x) = mx + b.
Vertical Line Test
Visual way of determining if a
curve is a graph of a function
or not.
GRAPH OF A FUNCTION

This refers to the set of all points (x, y)

in a coordinate plane such that (x, y) is
an ordered pair of the function.
Evaluate y = x + 2 using the
domain {-2, -1, 0, 1, 2} and express your
answer as a table of values, mapping
diagram, set of ordered pairs and a
graph.
The distance (in meters) a shark from
shore is given by the
𝑓(𝑡) = 3𝑡 + 25, where 𝑡 is the time in
minutes.

the same slope.

Two lines are perpendicular if they

have slopes that are negative
reciprocals.
