Assess privilege X In social work, we talk a lot about those who have been
and oppression oppressed versus those who are privileged. We look at our
from the own privileges and times we were discriminated against.
perspective of We also looked at why those things are and how it can
culture, race, vary. For example, looking at immigration, even though it
class, and gender is seen as negative overall in the US, there are some people
that are oppressed more than others. Women and children
are seen as “needing protection” and are typically given
asylum, whereas the men are forced to stay at the border.
There is also a way to come at this from a culture and racial
standpoint. It is more likely that an all-white person of no
Hispanic descent will be granted permission to get into the
country, but those who come from Mexico, for example,
will not be allowed. Finally, it is much more likely for
someone of a higher class to be able to get into the country,
mostly because they are likely to have more money to pay
people off.

Find, evaluate, X In Social Policy, I had to look at other policies people had
and apply in place regarding youth homelessness. After doing that, I
information had to look at what the organization I was trying to help
had in place and compare that to what I found from other
organizations and “best practices” so that I could apply
what I know to a policy and procedures in an effective way
that will help the homeless children in and around
Westmoreland County.

Demonstrate X In the “Social Policy” class here at Seton Hill, I had to
ethical decision- make decisions about a coordinated entry policy for
making homeless youth even though I, myself, have never
grounded in experienced homelessness. With that being said, I had to
philosophical not only think in terms of best practices and from a research
inquiry standpoint, but also from an ethical/philosophical one as
well. I had to use empathy in order to put myself in their
situation and be able to think “What would be best for me if
I were in this situation?” Using this skill was incredibly
important in order to look at a situation that I did not
personally understand from multiple perspectives to come
to an educated yet sensitive solution. Confucius had a
major emphasis on ethics and justice. He felt that everyone
should have similar opportunities and that we need to be
sincere to one another. He also believed in doing things for
yourself to develop your knowledge as opposed to learning
the rules. These two major ideas of his are what led me to
making the decisions I did with this project.
Recognize the X In the course “Faith, Religion, and Society,” I was able to
value of diverse look at different religions, primarily Christianity, Judaism,
spiritual and and Islam, and then compare and contrast them based on
religious their overall beliefs. I successfully completed this course, in
perspectives my opinion, because I now have a very basic understanding
of different religions so that I can respect them and know
where to go when I need help understanding them more in
order to be more culturally competent in my future and
current practice.
Exercise X I have been registered to vote since I was able to at the age
responsible of 18. Since then, I try to be as active as possible in
freedom and elections, whether it be a major one such as the presidential
civic one, or ones that are more on the local level. I base my vote
engagement not only on what the candidates are openly saying, but also
based on an based upon the things they have done outside of the
informed value elections. Many times, I have found that their words and
system actions do not match one another. I want to make sure that
the person I vote for has values that align with my own
both in a political sense, but also in a personal/social sense.
