1. Compare and Contrast Father Damaso and Father Salvi.

Father Damaso is an old Spanish Friar that is described to be arrogant, openly racist,
villainous and a shameless loudmouth. He is known for his petty and vindictive schemes with the
use of his power and influence as a priest. While, Father Salvi is a younger Spanish friar who
slowly revealed himself as a more cunning and villainous priest as Father Damaso. He is a more
gifted against secretly plotting the demise of Ibarra with the use of his religious role for political
influence as well as his personal vendettas. Father Salvi is also known to be lusting over Maria
Claria.

2. Is Noli Me Tangere Anti-Catholic or Anti-Religion? Why or Why not?

No, Noli Me Tangere is not an anti-catholic nor anti-religion because in the Novel there
are deep religious characters such as Elias that was given a positive light. Noli me Tangere
depicts the brutality and corruption during the Spanish ruling especially the corrupt ways of the
spanish friars towards the Filipinos. The novel criticizes materialism and the abuse of power in
particular.

3. Do You think Rizal portrays education as the solution to oppression? Why or Why not?

Yes, Rizal portrays education as one of the solutions to oppression because Rizal pits
religion and education against one another, portraying religion as an oppressive force and
education as a liberating force in the colonized Philippines.

4. Why does Sisa dies at the end of the story?

The abuse and trauma Sisa had experienced made her loose her sanity. Sisa died after
shock that she didn’t even recognized Basilio as her son. The trauma made it too much for her to

Noli me Tangere is the social cancer that depicts the corruption of the Spanish ruling as
well as the Catholic Church. Father Damaso and Father Salvi depicts the maltreatment and the
wrongdoings of the friars to the Filipinos. The novel shows the misfortunes of the people in the
Philippines due to the abuse of power of the corrupt Spanish ruling.
