Universal Isolators
VariTrans® P 27000
Instructions for Use
1. Safety Information
The warning symbol on the device (exclamation point in triangle)
means: Observe instructions!
Warning! Protection against electric shock
For applications with high working voltages, take measures to prevent
accidental contact and make sure that there is sufficient distance or
insulation between adjacent devices!
Caution!
Be sure to take protective measures against electrostatic discharge
(ESD) when handling the devices!

Caution!
The VariTrans® P 27000 universal isolators must be installed only by qualified
and specially trained personnel authorized by the operating company.
Do not connect the device to power supply before it is professionally installed.
Do not change the measuring range during operation. Observe the national
codes and regulations during installation and selection of cables and lines.
Equipment shall be provided with a means for disconnecting it from each
operating energy supply source. The disconnecting means shall disconnect all
current-carrying conductors. (It must be easily accessible and clearly identifiable
by the operator.)
Mains supply must be protected by a fuse of 20 A max.

26
Warning! EXPLOSION HAZARD
Do not connect/disconnect equipment unless power has been
removed or the area is known to be non-hazardous.

Warning! EXPLOSION HAZARD

Substitution of components may impair suitability for Class I,
Division 2.

Conditions for safe use (Haz. Loc.)

For the use in hazardous locations, this equipment is to be installed
into suitable enclosure, providing a degree of protection not less
than IP 54.

Devices containing user accessible switches and/or potentiometers:

the device must be installed into an end-use enclosure with tool
removable cover.

27
2. Intended Use
The Series P 27000 universal isolators are used for galvanic isolation and
conversion of signals in the range from ±20 mV to ±200 V and ±0.1 mA to
±100 mA. Depending on the model, input and output signals are permanently
set or you can select calibrated ranges by means of DIP switches. The preset
measuring ranges do not have to be fine adjusted. Other transmission
ranges are infinitely adjustable within the ranges mentioned above using
potentiometers. Signal transmission is linear. By means of the broad-range
mains adapter, the units can be powered by voltages from 20 to 253 V AC/DC.
Type H1 is connected by means of pluggable screw clamp terminals,
type F1 by means of fixed screw clamp terminals.

Warning against misuse

Do not operate the device outside the conditions specified by
the manufacturer, as this might result in hazards to operators or
malfunction of the equipment.

3. Configuration (P 27000 F1 and P 27000 H1 only)

3.1 Tools
A screwdriver with a width of 2.5 mm is required to open and adjust the unit
and to connect the wires to the screw clamp terminals.

3.2 Opening the unit

Disengage the top part of the housing on
both sides using the screwdriver.
Pull out the top part of the housing and
the electronics section until they lock.

3.3 Settings
Set the input and output ranges, offset and
bandwidth using DIP switches S1, S2 and S3
as indicated in the following tables. When
selecting a variable gain or offset setting, an
additional setting can be made using the
Span (gain) or Zero (offset) potentiometers
accessed from the front.

Caution!
Only use a screwdriver which is
properly insulated against the
voltage applied to the input when fine
adjusting the potentiometers on the
front.

3.6 Adjustment aid for all input and output values
Definitions: Inmin= lowest input value
Inmax= highest input value
Outmin= lowest output value
Outmax= highest output value
OS = output span (take from table on p 31)
EV = upper end value (take from table on p 31)
1. Select output range of unit (according to table on p 31) so that Outmin and
Outmax are within the output range.
2. Calculate the following auxiliary quantities:
Outmax - Outmin OS
Factor F = Input range IR =
Inmax - Inmin F
Outmin - (Inmin x F) - EV + OS
Offset OF = x 100%
OS

3. Set all DIP switches to OFF.

4. Calculate input range IR, set output range and offset OF using DIP switches.
4a. If the calculated offset OF does not correspond with an offset which can be
set with the DIP switches, set the closest offset (see table on page 31) and
activate the zero potentiometer (switch 2-5 OFF), short-circuit input and
adjust output to value Outmin- (Inmin x F).
4b. If the calculated input range IR does not correspond with a range
which can be set with the DIP switches set the largest range within
0.33 x IR ... 3.30 x IR (see table on page 30) and activate the span
potentiometer (switch 2-4 OFF), modulate input with value ≠ 0
(see table on page 30 for terminals) and adjust output to required value
(e.g. apply Inmax , adjust to Outmax ).

38
4. Mounting
The universal isolators are mounted on standard TS 35 rails.
