Reflection Paper - Waste Segregation

Ecological solid waste management is important to address the pollution caused by improperly disposed plastic materials like face masks and medical equipment. Poor waste management damages marine life, causes floods and increases health issues. The most challenging task is persuading irresponsible people to properly segregate waste to protect everyone's health, especially waste collectors. Proper waste management would make communities more resilient to disasters. Effective waste management involves distinguishing materials like biodegradable, non-biodegradable, recyclable and hazardous waste and placing them in appropriate containers. Everyone must begin segregating waste to reduce pollution and protect the environment.

ECOLOGICAL SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

We all know that plastic is a great innovation that has made our lives easier, but
its benefits outweigh its drawbacks. It is extremely hazardous to our environment,
particularly when improperly handled. Especially nowadays, when we are all compelled
to wear facemasks and face shields that are made of plastic, to protect ourselves from
the virus that is still spreading all over the globe. We have all noticed the difference in
our environment, where these facemasks, face shields, and waste, including personal
protective equipment of medical health care workers, are strewn about, causing
pollution, particularly to marine life. Poor waste management is damaging the world's
marine life, clogging sewers and causing floods, transferring infections, increasing
respiratory problems from burning waste, and hindering economic development.
I want to know more about different alternatives to preventing non-biodegradable
waste from accumulating and damaging the environment, such as these plastic
materials, face masks, face shields, medical healthcare workers' personal protective
equipments, and other harmful materials.
Even before the pandemic started, dealing with waste has been an obstacle in our
environment. Despite the fact that waste disposal techniques have been mentioned in
newspapers, televisions, radios, on community bulletin boards, and even in small
pamphlets distributed by community workers to every home, many people still refuse to
implement guidelines to properly dispose of their waste.
The most challenging task that we need to accomplish is to persuade and inspire
irresponsible people to properly segregate their waste. We can protect everyone's health,
especially waste collectors', by properly segregating waste. The collectors are usually at
risk of getting bruised and cut due to sharp materials that are not separated from other
garbage, and it may cause infections that may lead to health issues. Also, improving
waste management would make every community more resilient to severe climatic
catastrophes such as flooding, economic disruption, and population and livelihood
displacement.
However, how will we be able to effectively manage our waste? By distinguishing
biodegradable, non-biodegradable, recyclable, and hazardous materials. We should put
our rubbish in appropriate containers as it is more convenient and accessible to do so.
Furthermore, we should always wash and sanitize ourselves after dealing with waste,
especially before preparing or consuming meals.
Every one of us must begin segregating our waste as early as possible in order to
reduce air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and natural resource
depletion. We must assist ourselves in order to create good and clean surroundings.
Mother Nature must be preserved. Let us work together to protect our environment.
