Math 10 3rd Grading

The document summarizes three theorems related to polynomials: 1) The Remainder Theorem states that the remainder when a polynomial P(x) is divided by (x-c) is equal to P(c). It can be used to find the remainder without long division. 2) The Factor Theorem states that if a polynomial P(x) equals 0 when evaluated at c, then (x-c) is a factor of P(x). 3) Examples are provided to demonstrate applying the Remainder Theorem to find the remainder when a polynomial is divided, and using the Factor Theorem to determine if a binomial is a factor of a given polynomial.

REMAINDER, FACTOR, AND BINOMIAL

THEOREMS
Remainder Theorem
- If a polynomial P( x ) is divided by (x−c),
where r =R, then the remainder is P(c )
- Is used to determine the remainder of a
polynomial function without using the long
division method

Example:
Find the remainder of x 2+ 5 x−21 when divided to
( x +8 )

Solution:
x +8=0
x=−8

2
P ( x ) =x +5 x−21
2
P (−8 )=(−8) +5(−8)−21
P (−8 )=64−40−21
P (−8 )=4

Factor Theorem
- Given a polynomial P ( x ) , if P ( c )=0 , then
( x−c) is a factor of P ( x )
- If x−c is a factor of P ( x ) , then P ( x ) =0
- Used to determine if the given binomial is a
factor of the polynomial P ( x ) . If P ( x ) =0, then
the binomial is a factor of the polynomial.
Example:
Is 2 x+1 a factor of the polynomial 2 x3 −7 x2 +11 x−4 ?

Solution:
P ( x)
