PROBLEMS
16.1 Using Figure 16.12, select the minimum-size crane required to unload pipe weighing 166,000 lbs per joint and lower it
into a trench when the distance from the centerline of the crane to the trench is 50 ft. (300 ton crane)

16.2 Using Figure 16.14, select the minimum-length boom required to hoist a load of 80,000 lbs from a truck at ground level
and place it on a platform 76 ft above the ground. The minimum allowable vertical distance from the bottom of the load to the
boom point of the crane is 42 ft. The maximum horizontal distance from the center of rotation of the crane to the hoist line of
the crane when lifting the load is 40 ft.

16.3 High Lift Construction Co. has determined that the heaviest load to be lifted on a project it anticipates bidding weighs
14,000 lbs. From the proposed tower crane location on the building site, the required reach for this lift will be 150 ft. The crane
will be equipped with an L5 jib and a two-part hoist line (Table 16.3 load chart). This critical lift is of a piece of limestone facing
and will require a 2,000-lb spreader bar attached to a 300-lb set of slings. If assembled in the proposed configuration, can the
crane safely make the pick? (17,600 lb capacity > 17,115 lb load. Therefore, the crane can safely make the pick.)

Solution Walkthrough

Construction Planning, Equipment and Methods Problem 16.3: Determining if a Tower Crane Can
Safely Pick a Load

In this walkthrough the maximum safe lifting capacity for a tower crane is determined to see if the
crane can safely lift the specified load.

Aaron Cohen, Arizona State University

16.4 Low Ball Construction Co. has determined that the heaviest load to be lifted on one of its projects weighs 22,000 lbs.
From the tower crane location on the building site, the required reach for this lift will be 100 ft. The crane is equipped with an L7
jib and a four-part hoist line (Table 16.3 load chart). This critical lift is of a piece of mechanical equipment and will require a
1,000-lb spreader bar attached to a 200-lb set of slings. If assembled in the proposed configuration, can the crane safely make
the pick?

16.5 A crane lifts a load with slings, as shown inFigure 16.30. What is the angle between the load and each sling leg for which
the horizontal reaction is half the load?

16.6 A certain load and set of slings create a 20-degree angle between the load and each sling leg. Using a spreader for the
same lift would result in a 60-degree angle between the load and each sling leg. What is the reduction (in percent) in sling
stress and in the horizontal reaction when the spreader is used?

16.7 A 25-ton truck-mounted hydraulic crane is being used on a construction site. The maximum horizontal distance from the
center of rotation of the crane to the hoist line of the crane when lifting a load of 9,000 lbs will be 40 ft. Use Table 16.2 crane
data to select the minimum-length boom required to safely hoist the load.

16.8 Liftem High Construction Co. has determined that the heaviest lift on a project it is estimating weighs 26,000 lbs. The
project's tower crane will make this lift (Table 16.3). From the proposed tower crane location on the building site, the required
reach for this lift will be 90 ft. The crane will be equipped with an L6 jib and a four-part hoist line. This critical lift is of a piece of
HVAC equipment and will require a 1,400-lb spreader bar attached to a 300-lb set of slings. If assembled in the proposed
configuration, can the crane safely make the pick?

16.9 The construction manager on a high-rise project considers changing the 1.0-cy concrete bucket currently in use for
concrete placing to a 2.0-cy bucket, in order to save time as construction progresses to higher floors. The weight of the fully
loaded 1.0-cy bucket is 4,800 lbs, and the weight of the fully loaded 2.0-cy bucket is 9,200 lbs. The tower crane on the project is
the 105-HP hoisting motor crane profiled in Table 16.4, working with a two-part line. Would moving to the larger bucket save
time?
