Instructions: Attempt all questions. There are 12 questions in total. Total Points 120

Each question carries 10 points

Submit your work via Google classroom (scanned) and in hardcopy (hand-written) Weightage in course: 5
Problem 5:
A man and his wife appear in an interview for two vacancies in the same post. The probability of husband's selection
is 1/7 and the probability of wife's selection is 1/5.
What is the probability that:
a) Both of them are selected
b) Only one of them is selected
c) None of them is selected

Problem 6:
Suppose you were interviewed for a technical role. 50% of the people who sat for the first interview received
the call for second interview. 95% of the people who got a call for second interview felt good about their
first interview. 75% of people who did not receive a second call, also felt good about their first interview.
If you felt good after your first interview, what is the probability that you will receive a second interview
call?

Problem 7:
First 15 positive integers are written on a board. If two numbers are selected one by one from the board at
random (the numbers are not necessarily different), what is the probability that the sum of these numbers
is odd?

Problem 8:

A bag contains 3 black balls and 5 white balls. Paul picks a ball at random from the bag and replaces it
back in the bag. He mixes the balls in the bag and then picks another ball at random from the bag.
a) Construct a probability tree of the problem.
b) Calculate the probability that Paul picks:
i) two black balls
ii) a black ball in his second draw

Problem 9:
Suppose three people are in a room. What is the probability that there is at least one shared birthday among
these three people?

Problem 10:
A letter is taken out at random from 'ASSISTANT' and another is taken out from 'STATISTICS'. What is
the probability that they are the same letter?

Problem 11:
A man is known to speak the truth 2 out of 3 times. He throws a die and reports that the number obtained is
a four. Find the probability that the number obtained is actually a four.

Problem 12:

a) What is the probability that a person will not default on the loan given he/she is middle-aged?
b) What is the probability that a person is middle-aged given he/she has not defaulted on the loan?
