Keychain Access Solution

This document provides instructions for resolving an issue where Keychain Access prompts for a keychain password after changing a login password on a MacBook. It occurs because the keychain password does not automatically update when the login password is changed. The summary is: 1. Use Spotlight to open Keychain Access and select the "login" keychain. 2. Change the password for the "login" keychain by entering the old and new passwords. 3. If that does not work or the old password is forgotten, delete the "login" keychain and reset Safari defaults, then enter the new login password when prompted. This resolves the keychain password prompt issue by synchronizing the key

Keychain Access asks for keychain

"login" after changing login password

Background
Safari and other programs keep track of who is logged in and using the
programs. To keep track they use keychains that the MacBook's operating
system provides. They do this to prevent malware or a malcontent from
changing settings or generally doing bad things on the computer. Its a security
thing. The operating system and most programs want to verify that the owner
of the computer has authorized all actions that happen on the computer (Even
that authorization is a ‘blank check’)

Cause
If you change your account's password using your Mac OS X Install disc (or if
your network-based account password is changed due to a network admin
forcing a password change, which is the case for us), your default keychain
password (which uses the same initial password as your user account) does not
change. Because of this, you will be prompted to enter a keychain password
each time an application requires authentication that your keychain would
normally provide.

Method # 1 Try this as your first option. if you continue to have problems or
have forgotten your old password, Follow option # 2.

1. Use Spotlight by clicking on the magnifying glass in the upper right-

hand corner of your screen.
2. Type ‘Keychain access’ and press
‘enter’ or click on ‘keychain

access’ in the spotlight drop down list.

a.This will open keychain access where you will see
three panels: Two will be stacked vertically on the
left and the main panel which occupies all the space in the right side of
the window.
3.In the top left panel titled ‘keychains,’ insure that the ‘login’
keychain is highlighted
4.Click on ‘Edit’ in the menu bar and select ‘Change
Password for Keychain “login.”
5.Type type in the password you used before the mandatory
password reset. Then click ‘Ok.’
6.A new window will appear; Enter your previous password
again in the ‘Current Password’
field.
7. In the ‘New Password’ field, type
the new password you created for
the reset.

8.Re-enter the newer password in

the ‘Verify field,’ then click ‘Ok’

Method # 2: Use this if you have forgotten your password or if the issue
persists after attempting method # 1.

1. Use Spotlight by clicking on the

magnifying glass in the upper
right-hand corner of your screen.
2.Type ‘Keychain access’ and press ‘enter’ or
click on ‘keychain access’ in the spotlight drop
down list.
a.This will open keychain access where you
will see three panels: Two will be stacked vertically on the left and the
main panel which occupies all the space in the right side of the window.
3.In the top left panel titled ‘keychains,’ insure that the ‘login’ keychain
is highlighted
4.Then click on ‘File’ in the menu bar and select ‘delete keychain
“login.”’
5.A dialogue box will appear. On the left
side of the box click ‘delete references &
files.’

6. It is now ok to quit out of keychain access.

7.Open Safari and it
will open a dialogue
box letting you know
that it cannot find a
keychain to use. Click
‘Reset to Defaults’
then click ‘Yes.‘
8.Then it will ask you
to one last time to enter
your password. Enter
the password that you
use to login to your computer. In our case it will be your district password.
That’s it! It will not prompt you again until the next time we have a mandatory password change
or if you change your password using an OSX install disc.
