The purpose of this study is to know the effects of absenteeism on

academic performances of grade 11 student. This research is based on fact that

absenteeism is really affect on academic performances . The objective is also to

examine how really affects on academic performances.

The available grade 11 students of Cuenca Senior High School and the

firm itself were used as the respondent of the study. The data was collected by

interviewing the representative of the chosen respondents. Thus, the researchers

aimed to seek answers to the following problems:

(1)What are the reasons why some students are being absent?;(2)How do

absenteeism become a problem in the school?(3)What are the factors affect the

absenteeism?(4)How can we solve the problem of absenteeism?;(5)How you

encourage students not to absent? Through this we will know the effect of

absenteeism on academic performances.

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Absenteeism can be not only a symptom of students negative feelings

about school but also sourced by many different reason(Gokyer,2012).

Absenteeism is typically based on total days of school missed, including both

excused and unexcused absences(Balfanz&Byrnes, 2012). The State Board of

Education (2013) adopted definitions for excused and unexcused absences for

use by schools and districts in order to implement the statutory policies and

procedures concerning traunts, and the reporting of trauncy offers the three

forms student’s absenteeism.

The causes of absenteeism sourced from teachers;

Wadesango&Machingambi(2011), state teachers who are critical and have high

expectations from students cause absenteeism. From the parent;

Balfanz&Byrnes (2012) express family pressure affects the continuity of students

to school negatively.

Absenteeism define as a habit of staying away from the regular

classes without providing a genuine or any reason for not attending classes and

it is a traunt behavior that is negatively affects the prospects of a students.

Frequent absence from the classes may lead to improper learning and poor

attendance in the exams. The are likely to skip boring lectures and those that are

not relevant to their future needs (Roa,B.T,et als.,2016)

Regular attendance at school is essential for the students academic

achievements ,language development and social development. Students who

attend school regularly can be successful in their future professional livews

through achieving work related skills such as persistence ,problem solving and

ability to work with others to accomplish a goal

(Sanhi,S.,Arseven,Z,.&Kilic ,A.,2016). Regular school foundation to children

success but schoolabsenteeism is a common, seriuos ,and highly vexing problem

(keamy,C.A.,&Graeyzk,P.,2014,Febraury).

High rates of unexcused absences nave been linked to “school

disengagement” and lower academic achievement . Students with high number

of unexcused absences might be less motivated and supported at home then a

students with an equal number of exceed ones : therefor the respond for school

institutions absences are related to the extend to which students learn (Gottfried

2009).

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

The fucos of the study is to know the effect of absenteeismon

academic performances to grade 11 students. This study also focus

on how students avoid to absent . This study wants to make the

students know the importance of the academic performance that will

give successful to us.

The participants of the study will be limited to 10 students . This

study will be conducted during the third semester of the S .Y 2018-

2019. The research will be based from the survey and gathered

information of the researchers.

CHAPTER 2:

Review of Related Literature

Local Literature

The study showed that being absent for three days in a month strongly

correlates with poor performance. As educators, it is important to know the

threshold. Drawing policies on school intervention regarding absenteeism

requires guiding information on where to draw the line. Policies cannot be simply

drawn out of thin air. Three days in a month, that number, a result of research, is

a useful guide for teachers and school administrators. The study as described by

the article is only an initial analysis of the data. Ongoing research will continue to

unravel further the underlying factors that result into absenteeism. This is an

important task since this information likewise is necessary to design the

interventions that are relevant (de Dios, 2010).

Among the comments on the article is an informed one and it brings us to

another website, "Attendance Works: Advancing Student Success by Reducing

Chronic Absence".(Absenteeism and Student Performance January 09, 2013)

This study is primarily endeavored to assess the relationship between

absenteeism and students’ academic performance the case of selected pupils in

Laguindingan Central School. In line with this is also an evaluation on the

impacts of the factor determinants of absenteeism such as household chores,

financial constraints and parental guidance in relation to their academic

performance. (Academic performance5(7):3238-3264 · October 2017)

FOREIGN

Ingul,Klockner, silverman and Nordahl (2012) found that school

absenteeism associated with internalizing and externalizing behaviour ,family

work and healthy and school environment. Simons, Hwang, Fitzgerald,

Keilb and Lein(2010) found that there are association between absenteeism of

students and unfavorable school setting conditions . In addition , some

researches argued that students absenteeism (Gokyer 2012).

Schwartz,Radcliffe and Barakat (2009) reported that absenteeism

negatively related to future oriented academic goals. Another group authors

argued that students attitude towards teacher and school play important role in

school absenteeism (Adiguel&Karadas, 2013; Grokyer, 2012; Veenstra,

Ledenderg, Tinga&Karadas, 2010). For example Adiguzel&Karadas (2013) found

that student with high level of absenteeism reported negative attitudes towards

school.

In this notion ,previous studies has revealed that student absenteeism is

related academic performance (Adiguzel&Karadas, 201; Gottfried, 2009;

Ogichi&Thinguri, 2014; morrisey, Hutchison&Winsler, 2014). Previous studies

noticed that there is strong ralationship between students absenteeism and

school drop out . Students absenteeism impacts not only students ‘ educational

progress but also affect their social development (Tanner –Smith &

Wilson ,2013).

School (TVL) as the respondent of the study. This is a descriptive research. The

researchers use this method to describe how a absenteeism affect on a

academic performances to a student. An interview will be used for the

researchers to collect data in all their respondents. The study is limited to 10

students. The interview will be conducted in the said of school.

RESEARCH DESIGN

The research used descriptive research as a method in gathering all

information they needed to accomplish study they are conducting.

Moreover the researchers also used descriptive research for their

respondents to feel comfortable to express their thought and ideas freely .

RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS

The researchers used unstructed interview an interview without any set

of formed questions, this may have some questions formulated in

advance . It allows the interview to have a friendly and non threatening

conversation . They conducted an interview among the students from

Cuenca Senior High School . The researchers provide questions to be
