SCIENCE 5: CHEMISTRY
Make it CHANGE! | 1 QUARTER ST
OVERVIEW
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” – Ecclesisates 3:1
Science covers several aspects. It attempts to discover and explain the natural world. It
includes both living and nonliving things, from the smallest particles of an atom to the most
complex materials.
Matter make up the planet. Each type of matter is different form the other, but they may be
similar in some ways. Knowing their properties and how much matter undergo changes will help
you decide how those things can be more useful and more so, you can predict if this kind of matter
can also do harm to the environment.
This unit introduces you to the properties of matters, the basis in determining whether the
materials are useful or harmful, and of course, the changes that materials in our environment
undergo.
Good day Sebastianian!

Water Bleach
Matter can be found everywhere. They exist on Earth because each kind of matter has a
specific use or function. However, because of their characteristics, some kinds of matter can cause
harm to environment.
Now, how can you tell a glass of water from a glass of bleach? They look exactly the same
but some of their characteristics are different. Imagine what could happen if someone accidentally
consumes a glass of bleach, thinking that it is water? In this lesson, you will understand the properties
of matter and use this knowledge to determine useful materials from harmful ones.
DISCUSSION/LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Matter is anything that has mass and occupy space. Matter can be described and grouped
based on its properties. Properties are the external and internal characteristics of an object.
Let’s begin our journey with a short activity about the properties of
matter. As you go through this module, keep these questions in mind,
“How do you know when two substances differ from each other?” and
“How can you use the properties of matter in determining whether
materials are useful or harmful?”
Problem: How can you recognize the physical properties of matter in your environment?
Materials: sugar, salt, soda, pulverized crackers, 1 tablet ascorbic acid (pulverized), teaspoon of
butter, plastic cups, tap water, hot water, sheet of paper, and pencil or ballpen.
Procedures:
1. Get a clean sheet of paper and using a pencil or ballpen, divide the paper into six equal
parts. Then, put the samples of sugar, salt, baking soda, pulverized crackers, 1 tablet
ascorbic acid (pulverized), teaspoon of butter in each labeled part of the paper. All the
substances are harmless and can be touch, smelled, and tasted. Record your observation in
the data table below.
2. Put a small amount of each samples into separate plastic cups. Add an equal amount tap
water and shake thoroughly. Observe. Are the substances soluble or insoluble in tap water?
Record your data.
3. Using the same amount of substances and the same set up, add hot water in each sample.
Which of the samples are soluble in hot water? Which of the samples are insoluble in hot
water? Does it give the same observation in tap water? Why?
4. Record all your observations in the data table below.

Direction: Using the Venn diagram, give the similarities and differences of physical properties and
chemical properties. Write in the similarities in the overlap slope of the circle and the differences in
each part of the circle.

You are doing great! Since, you already know now what are the properties of
materials, let’s now move in identifying the useful and harmful materials in our
environment.
Quick Check!
Direction: Identify the following materials based on their characteristics and determine if they are
harmful or useful then explain your choice.
2. Orange
peelings
3. Bottle caps
4. Old newspaper
5. Dried leaves
6. Used diaper
7. Water bottle
CLOSING/SYNTHESIS/REFLECTION
Using your answers in the previous activities, try to analyze the following.
I. ODD-MAN-OUT: Using what you have learned about properties of materials, analyze the
following products in each box. ENCRICLE the product that does NOT BELONG to the group. In the
space provided below the box, explain the reasons why you have crossed out the said product you
have chosen.
Electric wiring covered with rubber, rubberized handle of cooking pan, lamp
shade, steering wheel covered in rubber

Matter is defined as anything that has mass and volume. It has different properties but you can
categorize them as to PHYSICAL PROPERTIES or CHEMICAL PROPERTIES.
Physical properties refer to the property of materials that can be measured and observed
without any change in the composition or alteration in the atomic structure of the molecules in a
substance.
Chemical properties refer to the property of materials in which substances interact with
another substance to undergo a change in composition.
Materials in our environment can be either USEFUL (does not emit or release
unnecessary substances that may destroy other living things) or HARMFUL (can cause damage
or something that may destroy living things).
LIFE LESSON
You have just learned that materials that surrounds us have different uses. We use them in
our daily lives. Various products from these materials, including the gadget’s everyone loves,
improve more and more every day as technology advances which trying make our live better.
God provided us with bountiful materials around us. Lets us learn to appreciate these things
and share them with others for greater joy.
Did you get all that information? If you still have any questions or
clarifications regarding on this lesson, feel free to message me and I will
gladly assist and help you before taking the assessment on the next page. 😊

Let’s now see what you have learned in our first lesson by taking the short
assessment below. I hope that you will get a high score on this assessment. I have a
trust in you. 😊
