medium-sized with a very high flower-to-leaf ratio.

A brand new study1 from the University of Arizona

Health Sciences has demonstrated the pain-killing
potential of cannabis terpenes, otherwise known
as “terpenoids.” The UA research effort focused
on the medicinal and therapeutic properties of
the Cannabis Sativa plant species and the so-
called ‘entourage effect’ that may occur when
plant compounds interact synergistically with one
another.

According to the study’s findings, the soothing effect(s)

of cannabis terpenes are amplified when combined with
cannabinoids. After studying mice to find out if terpenes can
also treat pain, members of the university’s pharmacology
department learned that terpenes could ease the pain with
a cannabinoid-like effect once injected into the mice.

“Many people take cannabis and cannabinoids for pain,”

said a senior researcher at the University of Arizona Health
Sciences Comprehensive Pain and Addiction Center, Dr.
John Streicher.

“We are interested in the concept of side effects, with the

idea that it may be possible to increase the moderate pain-
relieving effect of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), rather than
increasing the side effects of psychotropic drugs. You can
have a good cure,” added Dr. Streicher, who also assumes
the role of associate professor of pharmacology at Tucson
School of Medicine.

The results of this UA study suggest that, in the future,

patients who suffer from pain could experience improved
symptomatic relief from lower doses of cannabinoids and
terpenes, thanks to the entourage effect.

Even though marijuana was

legalized in 2016, California has seen
its black-market booming. Some
reports speculate illegal operations
outnumber legal businesses 3-to-1. ¹

Some of this market operates as it always has, and

some of it is running a legal business but technically
remains illegal (i.e., an illicit online dispensary).
Regardless of circumstance, the state’s cannabis
regulators are seeking to crack down on these
operations.

Total the opposite of what the state government wanted.

But how did things get here, and how can it fully transition
to a legal market.

Overregulation
Let’s start with one of the biggest problems in California’s
legal cannabis market: overregulation.
Whether you’re a business owner, a farmer, or a lab
facility, chances are you have to pay high fines just to be in
this industry.
When the state initially legalized cannabis, they
decided to make high licensing fees, which was heavily
criticized, most notably because most banks wouldn’t give
business loans to the cannabis industry (as it remains
illegal on a federal level).
In turn, only those with high capital (or those who had
been in the state’s two-decade-old medical cannabis
industry) were able to get their foot in the door. People
of Color (PoC) were left out and those who have been
negatively affected by the War on Drugs.
Still, beyond licensing fees, California has a long list of
regulations concerning cannabis. Some of the rules make

sense, like how packaging must be child-resistant and

tamper-evident. However, some of the rules are simply
absurd.
For example, the Orange County Register reported
that while Imperial County allows state-licensed marijuana
dispensaries, its three biggest cities (El Centro, Calexico,
and Brawley) have outright banned it. ² Of course, this isn’t
something we can pin on California as a state. However, it
shows how certain places in California don’t have as easy
access to cannabis - allowing drug dealers of those areas
to continue prospering.

It seems that Zoom, a world-renowned secure video

platform software, may offer its users much more
than a sophisticated method of staying in touch.
Washington State University recently harnessed
the power of this video telephony and online chat
system to assess the decision-making performance
of cannabis consumers; with satisfactory results.

The WSU study1, published in the journal Scientific

Reports2, saw a team of researchers observe cannabis
consumer behavior via the video conferencing app. Each
study subject underwent a series of cognitive tests after
vaping potent cannabis concentrates or cannabinoid-
rich cannabis flower that they had purchased from
licensed cannabis dispensaries in the legal U.S. State of
Washington, D.C.

According to the WSU researchers, there was no

significant influence on cannabis consumer performance
after participating in decision-making tests. However, the
group did acknowledge some minor memory impairments
pertaining to distorted memories, free recall, and memory
origin.

"Because of federal restrictions to researchers, it was

just not possible to study the acute effects of these high-
potency products," said WSU psychologist and the study's
lead researcher, Carrie Cuttler. "The general population in
states where cannabis is legal has very easy access to a
wide array of high-potency cannabis products. Including

 Tijuana is a border town on the Pacific Coast, just south of San Diego, California,
dividing Baja California from the US. Once a quaint city catering to tourists
crossing over for shopping and nightlife, Tijuana today is a modernized city with
more than 1.8 million. Its wider region hosts more than 2.1 million.

As legend has it, the city was named after a madam nicknamed Tia Juana. Eerily
similar to later slang, Mari-juana - said to be just as suggestive, feeding into the
Reefer Madness of the 1950s.

The first weed this writer smoked in 1975 was undoubtedly smuggled up from
Tijuana, making its way north to my hometown of Redondo Beach. Thanks to my
limbic system, linking scent to memory, I can still taste that flavor from time to time
when I partake of Mexico’s weed grown in the valleys of Baja California today.

As a personal anecdote, my favorite Aunt’s boyfriend was arrested and held in the
Tijuana jail in the 1950s, with my Aunt and a friend making a concubine visit to bust
him out. True story.

By land and sea, cannabis was smuggled across the Tijuana border to the states
for decades, meeting the supply and demand of the most illicit and beloved plant on
the planet. Once the crossing became more complex, elaborate tunnels were dug
out underground - discovered in the 1990s.

Emerging Industry, Lacking in Protocols

As in just about every country worldwide, the plant prevails, with Tijuana falling in
line. With ordinances for growing, manufacturing, and distributing plant material and
products still sorely lacking, the industry grows without guidelines.

Hemp high in cannabidiol, measuring in at less than one percent THC, better
known as CBD, was legalized for import into Mexico from the US in 2016. Since
then, CBD products with professional labeling are currently being made and
distributed throughout the country.

There are said to be 50 permits already issued through a sort of backdoor process
in Tijuana, allowing many to grow. Private clubs have been set up to regulate and
host safe access locations.

One such cardholder explained it was acquired by applying, being turned down,
then appealing using the 2018 Supreme Court decision that did away with the
prohibition of the plant.

It’s been three years as of this writing since the court gave legislators 90 days
to put ordinances in writing for both medicinal and adult use. This past year, the
court decriminalized adult use altogether, disappointed in the lack of effort to move
forward.

But, without guidelines, the private clubs and events being held throughout the
country exist in a gray area.

Doctors have also been allowed to be licensed to “prescribe,” which is unusual,

considering in the US the word used is “recommend,” since doctors are not
educated on cannabis or plant-based medicine.

But, without proper guidelines on how cannabis is sourced for a patient, it’s unclear
how this licensing will play out, as cannabis with THC is still not allowed to be
brought up from the states; only licensed CBD products can legally cross the
border.

Mexico is a socialized country, with its health department overseeing the medical
use of cannabis. This will be a challenge for the myriad small independent
pharmacies on every corner to get on board. Rumor has it there will not be
traditional cannabis dispensaries, but time will tell how and when safe access can
happen through the system it has now.

• 2 tbsp vegetable oil
• 1 tbsp bacon fat
• 2-3 large sage leaves

• 4 tbsp butter
• 2 tbsp cannabis butter (made in the mb2e)
• 8-12 each very small sage leaves
• pinch Jacobsen sea salt
• pinch fresh ground black pepper
• 2 tbsp cannabis-infused balsamic vinegar (made in the
mb2e)

how to make it
- in a medium mixing bowl, mix the first 13 ingredients until
combined well, set aside.
- clean the morels.
- put the sausage filling into a pastry bag fitted with a small
regular tip.
- fill the morels with the sausage, stuffing them until they are
completely full.
- after they are all full, refrigerate for up to 3 hours and
preheat the oven to 400° when ready.
- in a cast-iron skillet over med-low heat, add the vegetable
oil and bacon fat, brown the stuffed morels on all sides,
turning occasionally.
- after a total of 8-10 minutes of turning the morels. carefully
remove from the oven and place back on a low burner
- add the remaining butter and brown over medium heat.
Then add sage leaves and the cannabis butter.
- finish with salt and pepper and a drizzle of balsamic.
- serve warm.

the photoperiod from 18/6 to 12/12 in the grow tent. The
light used was 400w HPS, which I find ideal with my RVK
125mm air extractor.

Between the 28th and 35th day, the plants stretched like
real champions, with Bruce Banner Auto® reaching around
40 cm in height and all the Sweet Cherry Pie® plants with
heights ranging between 34 cm and 38 cm. As there was
still a good amount of space in the tent and the plants were
growing a lot vertically, I decided to do some Low-Stress
Training (LST) to lower the tallest branches and get a more
even canopy. With this, the 4 plants were leveled to 25 cm
in height. The outdoor team was not subjected to any LST
as they can get a good amount of sun every day from the
lower to the upper branches evenly. Instead, they had a
bath with neem oil as a preventive, because in previous
years I had some problems with pests in this balcony.

likely that you have had some sort of encounter with
those who work in law enforcement, but the extent
to which this has had an impact will vary wildly
from place to place. In the UK, it's often a case of
what some may call a 'postcode lottery' as there is
no consistency of approach from place to place.
What this means is that possession of something
as minuscule as a joint or less than a gram of weed
might result in a slap on the wrist and an informal
warning not to do it again in some towns while it
might lead to an arrest and subsequent legal action
if you were a few miles away.

This sense of imbalance and injustice reflects how

ridiculous the continued prohibition of cannabis is in the
UK. Indeed, the laws are there to be consistently applied if
they are deemed viable and relevant? What makes things
worse is that this issue highlights the complete hypocrisy
of the UK government. They have given licenses to
companies to grow cannabis to make medicine (Sativex/

listed as an illegal substance because it is a danger to
