DAY 1
I. MINI-LESSON

Hello! Are you all set to learn? This week 6,

you will be on how to access information
using computer. But, have you heard about
it? If not, then sit back and relax as I take you
to a ride of fun-learning.

The Desktop (overview)

The desktop is the main screen area that you see

after you turn on your computer and log on to Windows.
Like the top of an actual desk, it serves as a surface for
your work. When you open programs or folders, they
appear on the desktop. You can also put things on the
desktop, such as files and folders, and arrange them
however you want.

Working with desktop icons

Icons are small pictures that represent files, folders,
programs, and other items. When you first start Windows, you'll see at
least one icon on your desktop, the Recycle Bin. Your computer
manufacturer might have added other icons to the desktop. Some
examples of desktop icons are shown below.

To Open a Computer Program

By using the best methods for

accessing and running programs
on your computer, you save time
and make your life easier.
You can open, or launch, a
program by using any of the
following four methods:
• Click Start → All Programs.
Click the program name on
the All Programs list that
appears. You see a list of
programs; just click the
program on the sub list to
open it.

▪ Double-click a program
shortcut icon on the desktop.
▪ Click an item on the taskbar.
The taskbar should display by
default; if it doesn’t, press the
Windows logo key (on your
keyboard) to display it and then
click an icon on the taskbar, just
to the right of the Start button.

2
Computer programs/applications:
Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access,
Publisher, so on – use for documents to read, write, and edit
▪ Read docs, letters, PDFs, scripts, and more on your device with
Reading View.
▪ Edit documents from PDFs by converting to and from Word
documents.
▪ - PDF file conversion: save as PDF after editing and share your PDF
file with a few taps.
▪ Browser – Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, so
on. - provides you a fast and secure surfing experience.
▪ File Folder - A digital folder has the same purpose as a physical folder
– to store documents. Computer folders can also store other types
of files, such as applications, archives, scripts, and libraries. Folders
can even store other folders, which may contain additional files and
folders.
▪ Video/Image Viewer and Editing – Paint, CS5 Photoshop, VLC,
Windows Player – use to edit and/or create pictures and videos, to
play videos and movies.

DAY 2
I. MINI-LESSON

Hey! How are you today? Have you

learned something about yesterday’s
topic? Good! I hope you are all set to
jump to our next lesson which has
something to do with desktop icons
manipulation. Are you ready? Let’s
begin.

Adding and removing icons from the desktop

You can choose which icons appear on
the desktop—you can add or remove an icon at
any time. Some people like a clean, uncluttered
desktop with few or no icons.
Others place dozens of icons on their desktop to give them quick
access to frequently used programs, files, and folders.
If you want easy access from the desktop to your favorite files or
programs, create shortcuts to them. A shortcut is an icon that represents
a link to an item, rather than the item itself. When you double-click a
shortcut, the item opens. If you delete a shortcut, only the shortcut is
removed, not the original item. You can identify shortcuts by the arrow on
their icon.
To add a shortcut to the desktop
1. Locate the item that you want to create a shortcut for. (For help with
finding a file or folder, see Find a file or folder. For help with finding a
program, see The Start menu (overview).)
2. Right-click the item, click Send To, and then click Desktop (create
shortcut). The shortcut icon appears on your desktop.

To add or remove common desktop icons

Common desktop icons include Computer, your personal folder, Network,
the Recycle Bin, Internet Explorer, and Control Panel.
1. Right-click an empty area of the desktop, and then click Personalize.
2. In the left pane, click Change desktop icons.
3. Under Desktop icons, select the check box for each icon that you want
to add to the desktop, or clear the check box for each icon that you
want to remove from the desktop, and then click OK.
5
To move a file from a folder to the desktop
1. Open the folder that contains the file.
2. Drag the file to the desktop.
To remove an icon from the desktop
Right-click the icon, and then click Delete. If the icon is a shortcut,
only the shortcut is removed; the original item is not deleted.
Moving icons around
Windows stacks icons in columns on the left side of the desktop.
But you’re not stuck with that arrangement. You can move an icon by
dragging it to a new place on the desktop.
You can also have Windows automatically arrange your icons.
Right-click an empty area of the desktop, click View, and then click Auto
Arrange. Windows stacks your icons in the upper-left corner and locks
them in place. To unlock the icons so that you can move them again,
click Auto Arrange again, clearing the check mark next to it.
Note:
▪ By default, Windows spaces icons evenly on an invisible grid. To place
icons closer together or with more precision, turn off the grid. Right-
click an empty area of the desktop, click View, and then click Align to
Grid to clear the check mark. Repeat these steps to turn the grid back
on.
Selecting multiple icons
To move or delete a bunch of icons at once, you must first select
all of them. Click an empty area of the desktop and drag the mouse.
Surround the icons that you want to select with the rectangle that
appears. Then release the mouse button. Now you can drag the icons as
a group or delete them.

Source: https://bit.ly/3kPqiTp
Hiding desktop icons
If you want to temporarily hide all of your desktop icons without
actually removing them, right-click an empty part of the desktop,
click View, and then click Show Desktop Icons to clear the check mark
from that option. Now no icons are displayed on the desktop. You can get
them back by clicking Show Desktop Icons again.
6
The Recycle Bin
When you delete a file or folder, it doesn’t actually get deleted right
away—it goes to the Recycle Bin. That’s a good thing, because if you
ever change your mind and decide you need a deleted file, you can get it
back.

Source: https://bit.ly/334TNKX
The Recycle Bin when empty (left) and full (right)

If you’re sure that you won’t need the deleted items again, you can
empty the Recycle Bin. Doing that will permanently delete the items and
reclaim any disk space they were using.

DAY 3
I. MINI-LESSON

Hello! Are you all set to learn? This day 3, you

will be navigating Microsoft windows. But,
have you heard about it? If not, then sit back
and relax as I take you to a ride of fun-
learning.

Navigating Microsoft Windows using

the keyboard for many commonly performed tasks can
dramatically increase your productivity. Also, a
situation may arise when the mouse stops functioning
or you need to work on a computer without one. The
following sections contain many key combinations
used to navigate Windows using your keyboard.

Opening a program from the Start menu

To start off, you can access the Microsoft Windows Start
menu by pressing the Windows Key on the keyboard or by pressing
the Ctrl and Esc keys at the same time.
In the Start menu, you can use the navigation or arrow keys on
the keyboard to move up, down, left, or right in the Start menu. Once
you've located the program you want to run, press the Enter key.
You may quickly open a program by pressing the Windows key,
typing the program's name, and then pressing Enter.
Opening a program on the desktop
To run a program with an icon (shortcut) on the desktop, you
can move to the desktop by pressing the Tab key on your keyboard.
Pressing Tab while on the desktop switches between the desktop
programs/applications, Start, and each of the items on the taskbar. You
can determine what area you're currently at by looking for an item that is
selected. An item that is selected is highlighted or has a border of dots.
In some cases, you may have to press Tab several times before getting
to the desktop icons. Once one of the desktop icons is selected, you can
move to other icons by using your arrow keys.

10
Once the icon on the desktop you want to run is selected, press
the Enter key to open that program.
If you wish to open another file document, simply press Ctrl and O
keys.

Closing a window
Press the Ctrl and F4 keys on the keyboard at the same time to
close the current open program or window.
Users may also press the Alt and spacebar keys at the same time, then
arrow down to the Close or Exit option in the menu and press Enter.

Navigating between fields and buttons on a window

To move your cursor between objects of fields in a window
(such as a dialog box), you'll often use the Tab, spacebar, arrow, and
the Enter keys. Tab button on the keyboard is usually the default, but if
it does not work, try using the arrow keys. If you need to press a button,
such as OK or Cancel, press the spacebar or Enter key.
▪ Arrow keys - Using the arrow keys on the keyboard move
the cursor up, down, left, or right in the document.
▪ Ctrl and Arrow keys - Holding down the Ctrl key while pressing the
left or right arrow keys move the cursor one word at a time. Using
this shortcut is much faster than only using the arrow keys. Holding
Ctrl key while pressing up or down keys moves through each of
the paragraph in the document.
▪ End and Home keys - Pressing the End key takes you to the end
of a line or document, while pressing the Home key moves you to
the beginning.
▪ Shift key - The Shift key allows you to highlight or select text. For
example, holding down the Shift key while using the right or left
arrow keys highlights the text to the left or right. If you hold down
shift while pressing the down arrow keys, you highlight one line at
a time in that direction.

Finally, you can use the Shift key in combination with the other
above recommendations. For example, pressing and holding Shift and
Ctrl and using the arrows highlights a word at a time. Holding down Shift
and pressing the End key highlights from the current cursor position to
the end of the line or document.

DAY 4
I. MINI-LESSON

Hey! How are you today? Have you

learned something about yesterday’s
topic? Good! I hope you are all set to
jump to our next lesson which has
something to do with keyboard
techniques. Are you ready? Let’s
begin.

A Guide to Touch Typing Techniques

1. Touch Typing Techniques

The most important technique to learn to type faster is touch

typing. This is a technique based on developing muscle memory for your
fingers, and this is done by combining several other typing techniques
into it.
▪ Muscle memory – By practicing regularly, your fingers will be able to
remember where the letters are on the keyboard, and you’ll be able to
type not only without looking at the keyboard but also without
consciously thinking about it.

3 Stages – Learning touch typing is done in three steps

1. First you learn the home row of your keyboard, practice it until you
know exactly where each letter is and can easily place your fingers
in the correct position without looking at the keyboard.
2. After this, you will learn to master the rows above and below the
home row, the numbers row, and start practicing with special
characters and upper-case letters.
3. Finally, the fun part: practicing on real texts!
14
6. Typing Techniques: The Home Row

▪ The home for fingers – It’s called the home row because this is the
home position for your fingers. This is the position that your fingers will
return to after you finish typing something, and this is the position from
which you will learn how to find all letters and characters on the
keyboard.
▪ Structure – The home row is the row starting with the Caps Lock key,
and if you look at your keyboard you will notice two small bumps or
lines (depending on your keyboard) on the “F” and “J” key.
▪ Positioning – This is where your index fingers should reside. Your
other fingers should rest on the keys to the left of the “F” key, for your
left hand, and on the keys to the right of the “J” key, for your right hand.
▪ Movements – By doing this, your pinky fingers should be resting on
the “A” key and on the “;” key. Your thumbs will hover above the space
key, and you can use either one to press it. Don’t try to use both at the
same time, because it quickly gets confusing.

7. Typing Techniques: The Top Row

▪ Position – Place your fingers in their default position on the home row,
and look at the key above each of your fingers. For “F” this will be the
“R” key, for “J” it will be the “U” key, and so on. Each of your fingers
should reach to the key directly above it, and start memorizing it.
▪ Practicing – Practice this typing technique until you know the top row
just as well as the home row. Now try practicing with a larger text, and
you’ll discover that suddenly you’re able to type a large number of
words, without looking at the keyboard.
15
4. Typing Techniques: The Bottom Row

The bottom row is possibly the easiest row to master, because by now,
due to all the practice you’ve had, your fingers are much more used to
the motions of typing, and your muscle memory is starting to develop.
▪ Technique – All you have to do is learn the new letters of the bottom
row using the same principles as the ones used for the top row. Now
each of your fingers needs to learn the keys directly below it.
▪ Training tip – Exercising with words is fun, and it’s a perfect way of
developing your finger memory, but the real test is typing a large
paragraph from a book.

5. The Numpad Typing Technique

The numpad requires a typing technique in its own right. If you look
at the 5 key you will see the same raised bar as on the “F” and “J” key.

Keyboarding Techniques
1. Mastering the A, S, D, F, J, K, L, ; keys is the most important technique.
2. Use a color-coded keyboard to know which keys to press during
exercise.
3. Trust yourself and locate the key with your finger to build muscle
memory.
4. Each row and key is reserved to be hit by certain fingers.
5. Keep fingers to their designated area to lower distance, improve speed
and reduce strain.
6. Use the other hand when switching to upper cases to allow
simultaneous typing.
7. Focus on accuracy first, speed builds up with practice and progress.
8. Maintain a typing rhythm with similar time intervals for each keystroke.
9. Apply gentle pressure and force when hitting keys to improve efficacy.
10. Always maintain good posture while typing.
11. Keep a distance of at least 50 cm between eyes & screen to avoid
health issues.
12. Ensure a minimum height of 70 cm for tabletops to allow a healthy
posture
13. Practice touch typing techniques regularly to improve accuracy and
speed.

16
This will require correct hand positioning and smooth eye-finger
muscle communication. Below are some points to remember:
1. Keep your feet on the floor to maintain balance.
2. Position your body to the “H” key. Hold your elbows at sides.
3. Keep your overall posture in a straight position.
4. The chair should be 10-15 cm away from the keyboard.
5. Have your fingers curved over the home row keys.
6. Remember to keep wrists off the keyboard. You will do this quite often.
7. Eyes should be on the content while fingers locate the keys.

II. GUIDED PRACTICE ACTIVITY

Direction: Read the statement carefully. Write TRUE if the statement is
true, otherwise, FALSE. Write your answer before each number.

_____1. The most important technique to learn to type faster is feel typing.
_____2. Keep fingers to their designated area to a higher distance,
improve speed and reduce strain.
_____3. Eyes should be on the content while fingers locate the keys.
_____4. Keep fingers to their designated area to lower distance, improve
speed and reduce strain.
_____5. Mastering only A, S, D, F, J, K, L, ; keys is the most important
technique.

III. INDIVIDUAL PRACTICE ACTIVITY

Directions: Read and understand the statements. Identify what typing
technique and write your answer on the space provided.
1. By practicing regularly, your fingers will be able to remember where
the letters are on the keyboard, and you’ll be able to type not only
without looking at the keyboard but also without consciously thinking
about it.
_________________________________
2. All you have to do is learn the new letters of the bottom row using
the same principles as the ones used for the top row.
_________________________________
3. The keys directly above and below each finger are also part of their
motion range, and the “+” or “Enter” key can be hit with either your
pinky finger or your ring finger.
________________________________
4. Place your fingers in their default position on the home row, and look
at the key above each of your fingers. For “F” this will be the “R” key,
for “J” it will be the “U” key, and so on.
________________________________
17
5. This is where your index fingers should reside. Your other fingers
should rest on the keys to the left of the “F” key, for your left hand,
and on the keys to the right of the “J” key, for your right hand.
