Why does effective goal-setting help us achieve goals? What are the characteristics of
good goals?
‘A goal is a result we intend to reach mostly through our own actions’ (College
Success, 2015). By setting effective goals, goals become specific and clearly defined.
Specific goals are more effective in improving performance than are general goals or
no goals at all and an effective goal indicates what you need to do to achieve it. This
also means that effective goal-setting should be measurable so that you must be able
to measure the performance that relates to the specific goal. Effective goal setting
make goals realistic and produce better performance than moderate or easy goals. The
higher the goal, the higher the performance, as long as the goal does not exceed what
we are capable of doing and as such goals should not be so difficult you lose
