During this time, the capital of the Abbasid Empire was Baghdad, which grew to become one of the largest and richest cities in the world known for its public buildings, libraries, and centers of learning. The Abbasid Caliphs invited scholars, scientists, doctors, and artists to the empire, promoting advances in fields like mathematics, astronomy, medicine, and architecture. However, in 1258 Baghdad was destroyed by the Mongols, bringing an end to the Golden Age of the Abbasids.
