FIND YOUR FUTURE

This pack contains two activities to help you apply what you have learned in the ‘Find
Your Future’ module.
In Activity 1 you will receive tips on how to research current and future job trends and
you will investigate a career you are interested in.
In Activity 2 you will fill in templates to map out possible career paths you can take for
different jobs and careers.
You will need to use the information from the activities in this Activity Pack, for activities
in You and Your Career – Module 6, ‘Get Some Experience’.

REMEMBER THE KEY LEARNING POINTS FROM THIS MODULE:

1. Identify what industries and job roles best match your

interests, strengths, motivators and style by doing research
(online and offline).
2. It’s good to try and develop your industry awareness so you
can identify new opportunities and growing industries. You
can do this by watching the news, looking at company
websites, and using your network to connect with
professionals.
3. Create a career/job path diagram so you can map out what
routes you can take to get to where you want to be.
Remember you can transfer your skills from one role to
another.

ACTIVITY 1: FINDING A CAREER MATCH*

By researching career options and thinking about how these may align with your
interests, strengths, motivators and style, you can determine if a career will be a
suitable match for you. While conducting research, it is also a good idea to consider
the pros and cons of a career.
Use the hints and tips below to do some research. Then, fill in the template below to
help you determine what will be a good career match for you.

TOP TIPS FOR RESEARCHING A CAREER:

o Look at multiple websites when researching; be methodical and don’t just

rely on one source.
o Always consider the context of your local area - there may be differences
across the country in terms of what type of jobs are available and whether
they are growing or declining.
o Build your business awareness. Remember that industries are always
changing, so it’s a good idea to keep up to date with the news, trends, and
hot topics in your chosen field.
o Evaluate the job market for your chosen industry or career interest - this will
give you an awareness of growth or decline of an industry.
o Consider how each job will match your interests, strengths, motivators and
style - it will ideally check most of the boxes.
o Look for opportunities to develop your career - these may come up when
and where you least expect it!
o Think about where you want to end up, not just where you want to go next.
o Be flexible and keep an open mind - you may have to do a few different
jobs to get to where you want to be.

ACTIVITY 2: CAREER PATHS*

In the ’Find Your Future’ module you saw that different roles can lead to different career
paths. Knowing the career path to your dream job is important, so you know what you
need to do to get there.
Below, is the example career path from the module. It illustrates, the different routes to
an area manager of a garage:

In this exercise, it’s your chance to start mapping out a career path for something you
want to do.
Think about a job you would love to do in the future and research what the career
path would be to get there.
Using the template below, start at the bottom with the job you want to do in the future
and work backwards to see where you need to start. Add in any requirements you
would need to get to the next level (ex. qualifications, training or experience).
Check out different career websites to give you more insight on entry requirements
and the route(s) you can take to land your dream job.
Activity 3 has many useful links for recommended career websites that can help you
with this research.
