Review Contract Plans, Specs and Standard Sheets for Structural Steel Painting (Section 574)
Review Pay Item in Contract dealing with painting (Item No. 574.XXXXXX)
Study plans for bridge to be painted
Download and review MURK 7 & MURK 7-1 for use by inspectors
Review Specs for Paint - Section 708-02 Structural Steel Paints - Class 1 or localized approved
Class 2
Contractor provided copy of Quality Control Plan for compliance with paint specs (574-3.01)
Contractor submitted Manufact. Tech. Data Sheets 5 days prior to start of work (574-2.01D)
Each single coat of paint has a different color and provides contrast to the previous coats (574-
2.01C)
Pressure wash water is potable (574-2.02)
If contractor elects vacuum blasting, abrasive contains <1% free Silica (574-2.03)
Mark out areas to be painted with 3" buffer for each coat. Review with contractor. Confirm
quantity.
Wash surfaces with heated water pressure washer
Oil & grease removed per SSPC SP1 Solvent Cleaning
Vacuum Power Tool cleaning to bare metal per SSPC SP11
Contractor may elect to use Vacuum Shrouded Blast cleaning per SSPC SP10
Relative humidity <85%, steel is dry and no frost, steel temp more than 5 degrees F above dew
point
Feather out through each coat of existing paint and abrade 6" border
Cleaning standard conforms to SSPC VIS 3 or VIS 1 Pictorial Standard (574-3.02C)
Check that material is on approved list and verify all coats are from same system.
Verify batch has not exceeded shelf life. 12 months maximum.
All cleaned surfaces inspected and approved prior to painting.
Mix with a power agitator. Refer to Manufacturer's Instructions. QC to verify mixing and thinning
process.
Verify that the surface to be coated is dry and no rain is forecast. Paint to be protected from rain
during cure time.
Atmospheric conditions in accordance with 574-3.04A
No paint to be applied during rain or when rain is forecast.
All surfaces properly cured/tested and accepted prior to application of next coating.
QCI to record manufacturer's name, product number, batch number, thinner used, painting
duration, temperature data and wet film thickness measurements (Contractor)
Dry Film Thickness: Range as shown on manufacturer's data sheets. Test to confrom to SSPC-
PA2. Test frequency: 1/1000 sf coated. Calculate average over 5 spot measurements. All
coatings to be tested.
Paint Schedule in accordance with 574-3.04F
One bound copy of the Steel Structures Painting Council specifications SSPC SP-1, SP-10, SP-
11, PA-2
One bound copy of the current Steel Structures Painting Council Picture Standards SSPC-VIS
1, VIS 3
One copy of ASTM D 4417, D 4285
One Air Thermometer, pocket type, 10F to 110F
One non-contact Infrared Thermometer, 10F to 110F
One Contact Thermometer, 10F to 110F
One Paint Thermometer, 10F to 110F
One Magnetic Dry-Film Thickness Gauge, Type 2 w/calibration shims (0 - 60 mils, 0.1 mil
increment)
Two Wet-Film Thickness Gauge, Prong Type
Psychrometer and US Weather Bureau Psychrometric Tables
Profile Micrometer with extra course replica tape
