Flood

What is flood?
A flood is an overflow of water that submerged land that is usually dry. When an
area which is normally dry land becomes partially or completely submerged due to
rise in water level, flooding has also occurred.
Types of floods
There are 4 types of floods that are the biggest impacts around the world
⁃ First: Flash floods are the result of heavy rainfall or cloudburst over
a relatively small drainage area.
⁃ Second: Riverine floods these occur when a large amount of rain in
river systems with tributaries many independent river basins.
⁃ Third: Tidal flood when large bodies of water, like the sea or lakes,
overflow onto bordering lands.
⁃ Fourth: ponding rain water falling in an area is normally stored in the
ground, in canals or lakes.

Flood Causes
Flood is usually a result of natural disaster causes. It may also be caused by man-
made factors. There are many causes of flooding but I have included some of the
highlights among them such as massive rainfall, drainage systems, overflowing of
the rivers, collapsed dams, snowmelt, deforestation and other factors.

The consequences of floods

The consequences of floods, both negative and positive, vary greatly depending
on their location, duration, depth and speed, as well as the vulnerability and
value of the affected natural and constructed environments.
As most people are well aware, the immediate impacts of flooding include loss
of human life, damage to property, destruction of crops, loss of livestock, and
deteriorating of health conditions owing to waterborne diseases. As communication
links and infrastructure such as power plants roads and bridges are damaged, some
economic activities may come to a standstill, people are forced to leave their
homes and normal life is disrupted.
Similarly, disruption to industry can lead to loss of livelihoods. Damage to
infrastructure also causes long-term impacts such as disruption to supplies of
clean water, wastewater treatment, electricity, transport, communication, education
and health care.
Floods can also traumatize victims and their families for long periods of
time. The loss of loved ones has deep impacts, especially on children. Displacement
from one’s home, loss of property and disruption to business and social affairs can
cause continuing stress. For some people the psychological impacts can be long
lasting.
