Reaction Between Butane Gas, Dishwashing Liquid, Water and Fire

The document describes an experiment where butane gas is used to create bubbles in a mixture of dish soap and water. When the bubbles are lit on fire in someone's hands, they do not get burned. This is because the water and soap mixture protects the skin from the small amount of heat from the ignited butane inside the bubbles.

Reaction between Butane gas, dishwashing liquid, water and fire.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this experiment is to show the reaction with the use of the things

that you can find at home such as butane gas, dishwashing liquid, water and fire. When

the experiment was accomplished, it is noticeable that a person or a part of the human

body will not be burn even if the flaming bubble is in the hands or any part of the body

for the reason that the water and dishwashing liquid will function as its protector from

the flame and also because there is only a small amount of butane being used and as a

result it will not be the source of too much heat.

INTRODUCTION

When people touch something hot, warm or a heated object, people would

probably drop it or move the part of the body away from the source. This is because of

our nerves that will send an impulse from the burning area then the sensory neurons will

accept it and will send a message to the brain to move away from the source of pain

(Loh, Lee, Huang, & Tan, 2013). But in this experiment, people can play with fire in their

hands with the use of butane, butane has a formula of C4H10 therefore it is a gas

(National center for Biotechnology Information, 2016), in which will help the mixture of

the dishwashing liquid and water to generate bubbles and also with the help of fire or a

lighter to set the bubbles place on the hand on fire.

MATERIALS AND METHODS.

In conducting this experiment, you must make sure that you will do this in a safe

place where there are no inflammable materials however you must still prepare a fire

extinguisher in case of emergency while doing this experiment and do not do this

without adult supervision.

Materials:

 Bowl or any container

 Butane gas

 Dishwashing liquid

 Water

 Fire or anything that can produce fire

Method:

1. Prepare the materials.

2. Pour water in the bowl or any container.

3. Put the dishwashing liquid in the water.

4. Use the butane gas to produce bubble in the water and dishwashing liquid

mixture.

5. Scoop the bubbles with your hands.

6. Lit the bubbles in your hand using the fire or anything that can produce fire.
RESULTS

The water and dishwashing liquid mixture produce bubbles as a reaction when

the canister of butane gas was turned upside down and press against the inner bottom

of the bowl or any container but its position was inclining for the butane gas can escape

and be capable to produce the bubbles. When the scoop of bubbles was in your hands

and was lit up by the fire or anything that can create fire, you will not feel anything for

the reason that as the bubble was slowly disappearing or popping in your hands

because of the fire, it will become a liquid or water that can protect your skin from the

fire and since that there is only a small amount of butane being ignited, therefore it will

not produce too much heat (Urich).

DICUSSION

At first, we thought that the hand of the person will have a first-degree burn or will

get hurt but the experiment shows the contrary of our expected result. The result of the

experiment proves that there are possibilities that we can come into contact with a flame

without people getting hurt or being burned but this will only happen when people

follows the methods and uses the right materials and also by doing safety precautionary

measures to make sure that there will be no problem in executing this experiment. In

this experiment we also learn that dishwashing liquid and water mixture can protect us

from flame if there is only a small amount of gas is used since it will not produce too

much heat that can cause harm to people.
