Electrical Machines Lab 1

1. The document describes two lab experiments performed by a group of students on the Lab-Volt electromechanical system (EMS). 2. The first experiment involves using the phasor analyzer to observe voltage and current phasors for different circuit configurations. 3. The second experiment uses the metering window to measure three-phase power by varying the line-to-line voltage and current.

Title: - Familiarization with LVDAM-EMS System
1. Familiarization with Phasor Analysis.
2. Measuring Three Phase Power using the Metering Window.

1. Familiarization with Phasor Analysis.

Introduction:
This familiarization exercise consists of a step-by-step procedure that shows how to use the
Lab-Volt computer-based Phasor Analyzer. The exercise can be performed using either the
actual or virtual Lab-Volt Electromechanical System (EMS).

Procedure:
• Install the Power Supply, Resistive Load, Inductive Load, and Data Acquisition
Interface modules to the EMS Workstation.
• Make sure the Power Supply is turned off and its voltage control knob is set to the 0
position. Connect the Power Supply to a three-phase power receptacle.
• Connect the LOW POWER INPUT of the Data Acquisition Interface (DAI) module to
the 24 V-AC output of the Power Supply. On the Power Supply, set the 24-V AC power
switch to the I. (on) position. -Notice that the POWER ON LED on the DAI module
lights up to indicate that power is supplied to the module.
• Connect the equipment’s as shown in figure below

• Start the Phasor Analyzer by choosing the corresponding command in the Instruments
menu or by clicking the corresponding button in the FMS Instruments toolbar, in either
the LVDAM-EMS software or the LVVL software (depending on whether actual or
virtual EMS equipment in used)
• Make the following settings on the phasor analyzer
Voltage Sensitivity = 50 V/Div.
Current Sensitivity = 0.2 A/Div.
• Observe that a new appears on the Phasor Analyzer display. This line is a phasor the
represents voltage E1 (source voltage). The length of phasor El corresponds to the PMS
value of the AC component of the source voltage.
• On the Phasor Analyzer, select voltage E1 (source voltage) as the reference phaser.
• Observe that phasor E1 now appears at an angel of 0 on the Phasor Analyzer display.
This is because the phasor related to voltage Et has been selected as the reference
phasor. The reference phasor is always displayed at an angle of 0 on the Phasor
Analyzer display. All other phasors are positioned on the Phaser Analyzer display with
respect to the reference phasor.
• On the Phasor Analyzer, select the manual display refresh mode by choosing the
corresponding command in the View menu or by clicking the corresponding button in
the toolbar.
• After the completion of experiment turn off the Power Supply.
• Close the Phasor Analyzer.
• Remove all equipment connections.

Conclusions:
From this experiment we conclude the result that, E3 leads the current by the phase angle of
90- Degree. Also interpret the results that when we change the resistance it generally changes
the phase between voltage and current.
Voltage leads the current in the inductor and amplitude increases by changing the voltage.
Also the phase angle change by the change of voltage.
2. Measuring Three Phase Power using the Metering Window.
Introduction:
This section contains an easy hands-on exercise that demonstrates how to measure three-phase
power using the Lab-Volt computer-based Metering window. The exercise consists of a step-
by-step procedure that shows you two methods for measuring electrical power in three-phase
circuits. The exercise can be performed using either the actual or virtual Lab-Volt
Electromechanical System (EMS).
Three-Phase Power Supply: Three waves get by the phase angle of 120-Degree.
Line to Line Voltage: we get this voltage in the three-phase power supply, it is the voltage
between the two live wires in the 3-phase power supply.

Procedure:
First of all, setting up the equipment with the three-phase circuit as shown in the figure below

After patching the circuit, Open the LVDAM-EMS software and open the metering window.
Set the knob into 4-N supply and set another knob into 5-6 model (line to line Voltage) and
then regulate the voltages to show the results on the metering window.
Results:
The results are shown in the metering window of LVDAM-EMS Software.

In this experiment we compute the line-to-line voltage and current at different resistances values.
We get E (L-L) = 399.7 Volts and I(L-L) = 0.009 amp.
