CAPE Physics Lab 3

This document summarizes a physics lab experiment investigating linear motion. The experiment measured the displacement and velocity of a marble rolling down an inclined plank over time. Data was collected on distance traveled, time to travel, and calculated velocity. Graphs were made of displacement vs. time, velocity vs. time, and displacement vs. time squared. The results showed proportional relationships as predicted by theory. Sources of error included air resistance and an uneven surface. Precautions like dusting the surface and adjusting the incline angle were implemented. In conclusion, the experiment yielded reasonably accurate data to analyze linear motion concepts.

Title : Linear Motion
Aim : To investigate the dependence of the displacements and the velocity V' on time " when an
object moves along a straight line with a constant acceleration a.

Apparatus :Wooden plank, Marble, Stop watch.

Method :
1. Both the sphere and the groove was ensured to be clear of dust and any other debris.

2. The plank was propped up so that the sphere could take around ( ) to ( ) travel from the
top to the bottom.

3. The prop remained the same for the duration of the experiment to ensure that the tilt of
the plank remained the same throughout the experiment.

Results :

Discussion :

• Does your graph show proportionality? Describe graph fully

• What quantity does the gradient represent?

• Relate your results / graph to theory

Sources Of Error :
1. The major sources of error in this lab were air resistance and the non-smooth surface of
the incline.
2. The incline not being smooth is a random error and could result in the experimental
acceleration being larger or smaller than the theoretical value.

Precautions :
1. Raise one end of the runway to negate friction and ensure the marble travels at a
constant velocity.
2. Dust the runway to remove any dirt or grit.

Conclusion :
In conclusion, the velocity time graph of the marble down the ramp had a relative, if not
completely linear shape. To determine the displacement of the cart, find the area underneath the
line of the velocity-time graph and to find the acceleration of the marble, find the slope of the
line of the velocity-time graph. The data collected from this experiment was quite accurate and
testing was performed quite smoothly, however as stated early, there is always room for
improvement.
