SOME THOUGHTS ON THE TAROT SYSTEM
Let’s start with that - there is nothing mystical about a deck of cards. The Tarot illustrates the
cycle of life, the things each one of us goes through, the challenges and the good things, all of
life. We can view the cards as a mirror that reflects our life path, and reading tarot can be
predictive in the sense that it spots patterns in our behavior and can show the most likely
outcome based on those panthers. Nothing that we see in the tarot is set in stone. We can
always change our behavior/ actions and go for a different outcome.
Tarot could be a very powerful tool, a helping hand if you wish, in our journey. It walks us
through different stages in our lives and is a useful tool for the exploration of one’s unconscious
mind. It reveals possibilities that for some reason we weren’t able to see otherwise. The tarot
either clarifies, interconnects, or amplifies what already exists in the mind and brings it forth.
Tarot cards can't predict the future, they can only show us different paths, and possible
outcomes based on our actions. The cards can show us patterns of our behavior, they bring
awareness and enlightenment to change what we don’t like about ourselves and can help
evolve, work on our shadow side and assist during the process of integration.
● The next important thing to understand is that we pick cards at random, shuffle the deck
and blindly select cards and then arrange them in a spread.
A Tarot spread - it is the structure of the reading. We can look at it as a map of the
question.
The spread is constructed of different positions, and each position relates to a different
aspect of our question. For example:
- How can I get better at...
The first position of our spread would be: “the situation right now”
The second position: “The obstacle that we face”
The third: “ Needed action to overcome the obstacle, in order to improve…”
When the spread is arranged we turn the cards face up and start “reading” them. While
interpreting the messages, we take the meaning of each individual card, placing it in the context
of the position and in relation to the asked question.
2
By doing this the reader is creating a storyline that can give him/her new ideas on how to deal
with the current issue.
● While doing a reading - the cards that pop up may appear upright or in reverse ( when
the card is upside down).
Some people use reversals, some don’t and that’s entirely up to the reader to decide. No
matter what you choose it won’t affect the accuracy of the reading, because the deck is
structured in a way that includes positive and negative aspects, and is very well
balanced in that sense.
Honestly, in my personal practice, I don’t use reversals and tend to keep all my cards in
an upright position. Having said that, if a reversed card pops up in my readings I take it
as a strong sign that there are some blockages around the energy of that particular
position, and it needs extra attention.
Some readers interpret the reversed card as the opposite of its meaning, and some don’t
use reversals at all and just turn that card upright and then interpret the messages.
For a beginner, I would suggest starting only with the upright meanings and when you
have learned them by heart, try including reversals and see how that feels and then
decide whether or not you will use them.

CARD MEANINGS
The deck is composed of 78 cards divided into two sections:
● The Major Arcana - 22 cards that reflect the bigger, more important, and significant
stages, lessons, and events in our lives. We can look at them as a journey of our soul,
the spark within us.
● The Minor Arcana - 56 cards that reflect our daily lives, the challenges that we face, and
how we deal with them. The minors are divided into four suits, each of which is
composed of two segments - Ace through 10 and four court cards.
● When reading the cards their meanings are formed by different things:
- Each card is an embodiment of a different archetypal energy
- Numerology plays a big role
- The symbolism used in the different images
- The elemental influences
- The colors in each card
- Which way the characters are facing
- Facing Left - Emotion / Unconscious
- Facing Right - Logic / Conscious
- How does the card make you feel and your personal associations with all of the
above?

COURT CARDS
The court cards are a bit tricky when it comes to interpreting them in a reading. They can
represent the person who is asking the question, another person in their environment, or an
action/quality that the person needs to embody. Look at the rest of the cards in the spread and
trust your inner sense to see the right message from the court cards.

sometimes appear aggressive. A tendency of detachment, coldness, and
