Lesson 1. Describe today’s weather.

Grammar: Present continuous.

Affirmative statements

Form: Subject + verb be + (verb + ing) + complement

I am / I’m studying English (right now, now in this moment)


Complements
He’s taking a bath
She’s watching the football game
She’s reading the English book

Negative statements
Form: Subject + verb be + not + (verb + ing) + complement
I’m not speaking Spanish
They’re not playing baseball, they’re playing volleyball
We aren’t eating hog dogs

Grammar: Present continuous. Yes/No questions


Form: Verb be + subject + (verb + ing) + complement?
- Are you studying English right now?
Yes, I am.
No, I’m not. I’m studying chemistry
- Is it raining in Florida?
Yes, it is. It’s raining in Florida
No, it isn’t.
- Are they watching a movie?
No, they aren’t watching a movie, they’re playing videogames
- Is your brother doing the laundry?
Yes, he is.
No, he isn’t. he’s taking out the garbage.
Lesson 2. Ask about people’s activities
Grammar: The present continuous. Information questions.
Form: Qword + verb be + subj + (verb + ing) + complement?

ING RULES.
1. For many verbs add “ing” at the end.
- SpeakING
- CookING
- StartING
- DoING
- FixING
- TryING
2. Verbs ending in “e” drop the “e” and add “ing”
- Hope – Hoping
- Make – Making
- Write – Writing
Exception: with double “e” – only add “ing”
- Agree – agreeing
- See – seeing
3. Verbs ending in “ie” drop the “ie” an add “y + ing”
- Die – Dying
- Tie – Tying
- Lie – Lying
4. Verbs ending in CONSONANT + VOCAL + CONSONANT.
- One syllable (except w, x, y) double the last consonant and add “ing”
o Sit – sitting
o Run – running
o Stop – stopping
- Two syllables
o If the first syllable is stressed, only add “ing”.
▪ Answer – answering
▪ Visit – visiting
▪ Listen – listening
o If the second syllable is stressed, double the last consonant and add
“ing”.
▪ Admit – admitting
▪ Prefer – preferring
▪ Begin – beginning
