CS1000E 5.0 System Overview
CS1000E 5.0 System Overview
c
The Communication Server 1000E (CS 1000E) product is an IP-based
communications system that lets customers distribute a large number of
telephony users throughout their QoS-managed IP network, controlled by a
Call Server.
The CS 1000E is a highly scalable and robust IP PBX that offers support of IPbased
applications using industry-standard Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)
and H.323 protocols, while providing an industry-leading set of telephony
features and applications. The system supports a wide range of IP telephony
devices, such as IP Phones, Media Gateways, and soft clients for desktop,
tablet, and PDA devices.
With the CS 1000E, customers can evolve from a traditional TDM network to
a converged IP network. Deployment is seamless because the CS 1000E
integrates with existing PBX systems from Nortel and third parties, which lets
customers expand the size and functionality of their networks while preserving
their investment in other Nortel equipment, such as Nortel Meridian 1 PBX,
and Communication Server 1000 systems.
With CS 1000 5.0, the CS 1000E can be equipped with either a Common
Processor Pentium Mobile (CP PM) processor or an external CP PIV
processor.
The CS 1000E is available in two system platforms:
Standard Availability (single processor ± available with CP PM only)
High Availability (dual processor ± CPPM or CP PIV)

The IBM X306m and HP DL320-G4 Servers (COTS) servers are rackmounted,
non-proprietary solutions. They deliver the same functions as the CP
PM Signaling Servers but run on a VxWorks or Linux operating system.
With the VxWorks operating system, the COTS servers deliver the same
functionality as the CP PM Signaling Servers.
With a supported Linux operating system, the COTS servers support new
features and functionality, such as the Nortel Enterprise Common Manager
(ECM), which provides a common management framework for CS 1000
system.

The Media Gateway 1000E (MG 1000E) provides basic telephony services,
including tones and conference, to IP Phones and digital and analog
telephones. The MG 1000Es are controlled by the Media Gateway Controller
card (MGC) and are connected to the LAN IP network.
V The MGC only functions as a gateway controller under control of a CS
1000E (CP PIV or CP PM) Call Server.

Media Gateway 1000B systems are supported where IP phones physically
located at a branch office can be managed and controlled under a CS 1000E
Core Call Server.
(
The Survivable Remote Gateway (SRG) is also supported using the Branch
Office functionality.

The separate LANs connecting the Media Gateway 1000E to the CS 1000E
Call Server and to the customer¶s network are as follows:

( )* +'()*: The CS 1000E
ELAN is a 100BaseT full-duplex LAN, used for management and
signaling traffic between the CS 1000E Call Server, Signaling Server, and
Media Gateway 1000Es. The CS 1000E ELAN isolates critical telephony
signaling between the CS 1000E Call Server and the other components.

TLAN is a 100BaseT full duplex LAN, used for telephony voice and
telephony signaling traffic. The TLAN is separate from the Customer
LAN. It connects the Signaling Server and Voice Gateway Media Cards to
the Customer LAN, and isolates the IP Telephony node interface from
broadcast traffic.

The CS 1000E supports the following telephones:
IP Phones
Audio Conference Phone 2033
Analog telephones
Digital telephones
Attendant Console
Wireless telephones

CS 1000E uses a Web server that supports a simplified Web-based
management of CS 1000E elements. This management tool has a graphical
user interface that provides an alternative to some of the traditional overlays/
CLI and simplifies overall management with functionalities, such as
Gatekeeper/IP Services and IP Peer configuration and software/firmware and
patches download.

The Nortel Enterprise Common Manager (ECM) provides a common
framework for CS 1000 Element Manager and Network Routing Service
Manager (NRS Manager) functions. The ECM is accessed with a standard web
browser. The same user interface is used throughout the framework, creating a
common look and feel.
The ECM eliminates the need for multiple logins to different management
applications, such as Element Manager and the NRS. It provides enhanced
security and management capabilities. It also introduces new web capabilities,
such as support for Overlays 10 and 11 for telephone administration; for
example, Add, Change, Delete, Move, Swap and Edit operations.
V The ECM is only supported on an IBM 306 or HP DL320 Commercial
Off the Shelf (COTS) server.
V The support for Overlays 10 and 11 is only supported on the ECM
Linux platform.
The CS 1000E delivers software with features such as Gatekeeper, Branch
Office, Virtual Office, and IP Peer Networking. The CS 1000E requires
Communication Server 1000 Release 5.0 (CS 1000 Release 5.0) or later
software.
CS 1000 5.0 or later software supports both H.323 and the Session Initiation
Protocol (SIP) on the same Signaling Server platform. SIP is a protocol
standard used to establish, modify, and terminate conference and telephony
sessions in IP networks.
Communications reliability is critical to the operation of any business. A
number of capabilities are available with Communication Server 1000E (CS
1000E) to ensure that telephony is available when one or more of the following
situations occur:
A hardware component fails
A software component fails
The IP network suffers an outage
c ,
The Communication Server 1000E (CS 1000E) provides several levels of
redundancy to ensure that the telephony services can withstand single
hardware and network failures. Communication Server 1000E (CS 1000E)
provides the following component redundancy:
Redundant CS 1000E Call Servers:
² The health of the active Call Processor can change or manual
intervention can cause control of call processing to switch from one
CPU to the other using a Graceful Switchover, leaving all call
processing states intact.
Signaling Server software, including SIP Gateway, H.323 Gateway, and IP
Phone software:
² If the master (Leader) Signaling Server is unavailable, a Follower
Signaling Server becomes the IP Telephony node master.
² Signaling Servers share set registrations (load-sharing).
H.323 Gatekeeper:
² If the Primary Gatekeeper is unavailable, an Alternate Gatekeeper can
be configured (automatic database synchronization).
!c
The system is also designed to integrate with the Multimedia Communication
Server 5100 (MCS 5100) portfolio of multimedia applications for the
enterprise and other standards-based SIP applications.
The SIP Gateway is implemented according to SIP standards. The SIP
Gateway connects CS 1000 systems to other Nortel or third-party SIP-enabled
products. This direct SIP interface is used to interwork with products such as
the Multimedia Communication Server 5100 (MCS 5100) or CS 2000.
V For more information on interworking, refer to the c

Nortel Converged Office is an advanced technology application that works
with the CS 1000E system to break down today¶s device- and network-centric
silos of communication.
The Nortel Converged Office combines the business grade telephony of the CS
1000E with the real-time multimedia communication provided by Microsoft
Office Live Communications Server 2000 and Microsoft Office
Communicatior 2005 products. The full set of business grade telephony
features available with CS 1000 phones is integrated with the Microsoft Office
Communicator client and can also be operated from a CS 1000 phone.
Converged Office offers the ability to add other media types, such as video,
IM, file and application sharing to an a existing voice call without the need to
establish an independent session between users.
Microsoft integration also lets a user add user's to a call through the c
+
ccapability.
For Media Security of Calls, Converged Office 2.0 provides SIP support to
ensure a customer's requirement of security in their Converged Office-based
calls.
