- Course title: Classroom Practicalities
- Semester: Semester 2, 2021-2022
- Contact hours per week: 4 50-minute periods each week
- Assumed background: ENGL 356 is a three-credit course intended for juniors majoring in
English language teacher education. This course requires prerequisite knowledge on the
subject of Practice of English Language Teaching (ENGL 331)
- Course description: Classroom Practicalities aims to provide pre-service teachers of English
with an insight into coursebook evaluation and adaptation, classroom management principles,
basic concepts of testing and assessment, test evaluation and assessments of language skills
and components.

II. Learning Objectives
After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:

- Understand basic knowledge about textbook development. (TC3.1.1)


- Understand criteria involved in choosing textbooks appropriate for their teaching contexts.

- Understand techniques and skills related to classroom management and apply them to manage
the class effectively. (TC3.1.6)
- Understand basic concepts in language testing and assessment. (TC3.1.8, TC4.3.1)
- Evaluate and design test items. (TC3.1.8)
- Assess students’ language competence. (TC3.1.8, TC4.3.1)

Apart from the coursebook, students will be provided with different reading materials and
handouts before lectures.

IV. Assessment
1. Class attendance and participation
- Weighting: 10%
- Students are required to attend at least 80% of class hours. If they are absent for over 20%
of the whole course, they are not permitted to take the final exam.
- Students are also required to participate actively in presentations and discussions.
2. Ongoing assessment
- Weighting: 30%
- Ongoing assessment include group presentations and a mid-term test.
3. End-of-term test
- Weighting: 60%
