VITAS NG TONDO
GOAL: To relate the 17 Sustainable developmental goals to the documentary Vitas ng
Tondo.
1. Make a reflection about the documentary Vitas ng Tondo.
Jay Taruc's documentary titled "Vitas ng Tondo" showed the status of the families
living in Vitas, a place that should only be a temporary housing for the residents of
Smokey Mountains back in the 90’s but has become their permanent homes since then.
He featured some people residing in Vitas and showed a glimpse of their lives. One of
the featured people is Michelle, a mother who provides for her 9 children by scavenging.
Although this is an honorable work, it is not a decent work. The money she gets isn’t
enough for her family’s everyday needs. As I watched the video, it really breaks my heart
seeing them like that. They have no choice but to stay there because that’s the only place
they can earn and that is where their livelihood is. Some of them had to do “solvent
sniffing” in order for them not to feel hunger. They are trying their best to live a normal life
despite the situation they have. The video made me realize how lucky I am and I should
be grateful of everything I have now because not all people have the same privilege as
me. I shouldn’t be complaining about the food I eat and the things I get because not all
people can eat many food as me and can buy the things they want. I should be contented
in everything I have. And I hope one day, I can visit and help those people even in small
and simple things only because people like them deserves everything the world has to
offer.
