Jamia Millia Islamia: Survey Camp Report
ACKNOLEDGEMENT
I would like to extend my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to
Prof. Shamshad Ahamad, Prof. Quamrul Hasan and Prof.
Ziauddin Ahmad who helped me in this endeavour and
without their help, cooperation, guidance and
encouragement, the report couldn’t have been what it
evolved to be.
I extent my heartfelt thanks to my faculty for their guidance
and constant supervision, as well as providing me with
necessary information required for the report.

ABSTRACT
Surveying or land surveying is the technique, profession, and
science of determining the terrestrial or three-dimensional
positions of points and the distances and angles between them. A
land surveying professional is called a land surveyor. These
points are usually on the surface of the Earth, and they are often
used to establish maps and boundaries for ownership, locations,
such as building corners or the surface location of subsurface
features, or other purposes required by government or civil law,
such as property sales. It was organized by the Department of
Civil Engineering.
The major objective of the camp work was to train the students
in taking field reading observations pertaining to some of the
real-world problems such as triangulation, contouring, etc., and
in all the related calculations and in the preparation of the
required maps. And also, to determine the co-ordinates of few
triangulation stations and the co-ordinates of few stations by
Tachometric surveying. This year the Dept held the survey
camp in online mode.

INTRODUCTION
SURVEYING:
Surveying is the process of determining the relative position of
natural and manmade features on or under the earth’s surface, the
presentation of this information either graphically in the form of
plans or numerically in the form of tables and the setting out of
measurements on the earth’s surface. It usually involves
measurements, calculations, the production of plans, and the
determination of specific locations.
Surveyors work with elements of geometry, trigonometry, regression
analysis, physics, engineering, metrology, programming languages,
and the law. They use equipment, such as total stations, robotic total
stations, GPS receivers, retroreflectors, 3D scanners, radios, hand-
held tablets, digital levels, subsurface locators, drones, GIS, and
surveying software. Surveying has been an element in the
development of the human environment since the beginning of
recorded history. The planning and execution of most forms of
construction require it. It is also used in transport, communications,
mapping, and the definition of legal boundaries for landownership. It
is an important tool for research in many other scientific disciplines
Principle of surveying:
Two basic principles of surveying are:
Always work from whole to the part,
To locate a new station by at least two
measurements (Linear or angular) from fixed reference
points.
CONTURING:
Contouring in surveying is the determination of elevation of
various points on the ground and fixing these points of same
horizontal positions in the contour map. To exercise vertical
control levelling work is carried out and simultaneously to
exercise horizontal control chain survey or compass survey or
plane survey is to be carried out. If the theodolite is used,
both horizontal and vertical controls can be achieved from the
same instrument.
LONGITUDINAL PROFILE:
The profile drawing is basically a graph of elevations, plotted on
the vertical axis, as a function of stations, plotted on horizontal
axis. All profile drawings must have a proper title block, and
both axes must be fully labelled with stations and elevations.
TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY:
Methodology:
1. The X, Y, Z coordinates of 320 points were given in an excel
sheet. Change this file into .CSV form.
2. Now open the AutoCAD & SW_DTM Software one by one.
3. Import all the points using SW_DTM in the AutoCAD and draw the
boundary of these points.
4. Using these points draw the contours with the help of SW_DTM contour
making option.
5. Now draw an arbitrary alignment on the contours and mark the
chainage with regular interval.
6. Now draw the L-Section & X-Section of that alignment.
