The Importance of Technology in Teaching and Learning English
The Importance of Technology in Teaching and Learning English
Section: 01
Technology is part of the daily life of human beings, it is present in all fields, it is a tool that
facilitates planning, directing, executing, and controlling almost everything in an organized
way. Of course, in the area of education, it can be used successfully. The use of technology
in the classroom allows meaningful interaction between the teacher and the student as long
as it is used appropriately because it is necessary to remember that they do not work by
themselves, it is human beings who give them the opportunity of movement and the
application of these, so that they can be used in the best way. In addition, it is important to
highlight that the new generation of English teachers must strive to train professionals who
not only understand and interpret the purposes of the English language speakers in
pragmatic and semantic terms but are also reflective, critical, autonomous, through the
incorporation of ICT as an enriching tool in the pedagogical field.
Some studies carried out by UNESCO (2019) indicate that students learn by recreational
and gamified activities, not necessarily formal, they maintain a higher percentage of the
information and knowledge that the teacher transmits to them, also they make it significant
learning to real life. In other words, it is essential to develop skills and competencies in
understanding and interpreting English language, whether orally or in writing, through
technological tools that help students to take advantage of their potential at the same time
build knowledge in the foreign language.
English learning is hard work sometimes. Effort is required at all times. But if the teacher
does not make good use of technology in the classroom, it is a problem because the student
will not have real learning, so before implementing the different games in the classroom,
the teacher must set limits and instructions so that everything will follow on the right track,
having knowledge of how apps work and choosing them according to the students'
knowledge.
The COVID-19 pandemic is a clear demonstration of why the use of platforms and apps
should be a vital part of teaching and learning English. The effective use of digital learning
tools in classrooms can increase student engagement, help teachers improve their lesson
plans, and facilitate personalized learning. It also helps students build essential 21st-century
skills. Some platforms and apps for the new generation of teachers
The app for the activity using technology is Edpuzzle, it allows editing any video to add questions,
create quizzes or add voice notes. It's totally free and easy to use. In here,
it is possible how the video will reproduce and how student will be able
to participate with the link that teacher will share on the general Teams
chat. In this case, the video is about a rude receptionist, so students have
to use a polite request to explain what the receptionist's behavior should
look like for patients.
When starting to create the questionnaire with the questions that will be added to the video,
it is totally easy, it just needs to put the cursor where the question is going to be added and
that's it. In doing so, it gives the option to choose the type of questions, either multiple choice
or open- ended questions.
When the activity is finished for the students to participate in it, they will be able to
visualize it in this way
Reflexive essay.
What I like the most is that thanks to technology, teachers can personalize student learning. It
enables them to improve their instructional methods and personalize learning. These include
watching videos to go deeper into the topic, the teacher-can-use app like Edpuzzel can take
some pauses automatically during the video and give time to answer the questions, a pop quiz
on Kahoot or Quizizz. It is also great content that helps awaken and stimulate curiosity in
students, so the teacher must explain, either through a video tutorial or during class, step by
step, how to use them. Learning and teaching a second language can be accomplished in a
number of ways. But only a committed student or teacher can take advantage of what
technology offers them at the touch of a single click.
