Session Xiii: Project Duration

The document discusses project duration and the preparation of schedules. It defines project duration as the total time to complete a project, usually in working units. Duration depends on resource availability and capacity. The computation of duration is based on assessments, historical data, PERT-CPM, and agency issuances. Two DPWH orders provide references on standardized construction durations. Sample calculations of duration are shown using these orders, incorporating factors like mobilization days and workability. The preparation of PERT-CPM, S-curves and bar charts is also outlined, involving identifying activities and milestones, sequencing, and time/cost plotting.

Definition of Project Duration

2018 CMGP
Project Duration is the total time that it takes to complete a
project that is usually expressed in terms of working time
units (hours, days, weeks, months and years). The duration
depends on the availability and capacity of the resources.
Computation of Project Duration

Basis used to compute the project duration:

2018 CMGP

1. Assessment of the person who will conduct the activity

1. Historical information
1. PERT-CPM
1. Other Agency and Department Issuances

Unworkable Days
2018 CMGP

- Sundays - usually 4 or 5 days per month

- Holidays - regular holidays

- Pre-Determined Unworkable Days - rainy/unworkable days

considered unfavorable for the prosecution of works at the site

For projects costing more than P150 Million

- No standard duration was established

- Computation shall be based on the PERT/CPM schedule,

considering the use of optimum additional resources
Preparation of Construction Schedule

Scheduling
2018 CMGP

Is a listing of a project's milestones, activities, and

deliverables, usually with intended start and finish dates.
Those items are often estimated by other information
included in the project schedule of resource allocation,
budget, task duration, and linkages of dependencies and
scheduled events.
Preparation of Construction Schedule

PERT-CPM
2018 CMGP
Is a project management tool used to schedule, organize, and
coordinate tasks within a project. It is basically a method to
analyze the tasks involved in completing a given project, especially
the time needed to complete each task, and to identify the
minimum time needed to complete the total project.
The critical path method (CPM) of scheduling is the most common
format used worldwide in the construction industry.
PERT-CPM
Preparation of PERT-CPM

Identify the each activities

2018 CMGP

Determine the proper sequence of the activities

Construct a network diagram

Determine the time required for each activity

Determine the critical path

PERT-CPM

2018 CMGP
S-Curve and Bar Chart

Is a graphical report which2018

displays
CMGP the cumulative progress of a
project.

The purpose of a construction s-curve is to make sure that the

project is tracking according to what was planned, so that it
finishes on time and on budget.
S-Curve and Bar Chart

The reason for an S-curve being called an 'S-curve' is because the

shape/line of the graph typically
2018 CMGP resembles an S shape when

plotted. This is because projects are 'slow to start', ramps up with

all types of activity during the middle part of project delivery, and
slows towards the end.
