DEFINITION OF SOCIAL DEFINITION OF APPLIED SOCIAL

Social science is the branch of Applied Social Sciences is an integrated
science devoted to the study of science cutting across and transcending
various social science disciplines in

MY REFLECTION
The social sciences don’t produce much in the way of patentable widgets or,
indeed, life-saving vaccines. However, the analysis and insights they generate can
and do underpin better-evidenced decisions and help guide and target insights
from the ‘natural’ sciences. There are no point devising lockdowns that nobody will
follow or developing a vaccine that nobody will take. This is just one strand of social
science questions emerging from Covid-19. Will existing theories about the factors
that shape our responses to crises and isolation hold true in these new
circumstances? Early data from the Pew Research Centre suggest that women,
young people, and those with lower incomes, as well as “those whose jobs or
income have been cut by the outbreak”, are “more likely than other groups to fall
into the high distress category”. As the crisis continues and our social world gets
remade, there is no doubt that the research agenda of social scientists will change
profoundly. Whether this becomes a defining moment for them in other ways, it’s
perhaps too early to judge. But it does feel as though this is the time for the whole
to become greater than the sum of its parts, and for specialists to bring their
expertise and insight together not just to cope with the crisis but to help promote
a regrowth of culture, society and economy in ways that enable future generations
to flourish.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SOCIAL SCIENCES and APPLIED SOCIAL
SCIENCES

Social sciences are more specific and focused on a distinct facet of a social
phenomenon while applied social science attempts to focus on a distinct issue but
use insights arising from various social sciences disciplines.
While social science may explore broadly their distinct disciplines, some of their
input may easily become applied while others may remain theoretical.
When Social sciences theories, concepts, methods, and findings gain application
of problems identified in the wider society, then applied social science is
achieved.

a. History and Anthropology
History studies and record past events while Anthropology study of people, past
and present with a focus on understanding the human condition.
b. Sociology and Anthropology
Sociology understands the way people relate to each other and function as a
society or society’s subgroups while Anthropology study people, past and present
with a focus on understanding the human condition.
c. Economics and Demography

are mutually related to each other.
d. Political Science and History
Political Science depends upon some and not all Historical Facts: Whereas History
is a chronological record of all events and developments, Political Science is
interested only in those facts which had an impact on the nature and functioning
of the state system and governments of various states.
e. Sociology and Psychology
Sociology understands the way people relate to each other and function as a
society or society’s subgroups while Psychology studies the human mind and try
to understand people experience the world through various emotion, ideas, and
conscious states.

2. Counseling places more of an emphasis on diagnosing and treating mental

health disorders or specific sets of problems. Social work, on the other hand, can
involve counseling but also has a focus on helping patients or others in need to
navigate the system to get the help that they need.
3. They both provide adequate training for careers in the field of journalism and
mass communication because of the multidisciplinary knowledge and skills that
graduates learn from the social sciences.
