Week 1 Day 1 To 2: GRADE 11-Physical Science 3Rd Quarter-Prelim

The document is a module for a Grade 11 Physical Science class covering the origin of elements. It discusses how the earliest elements formed in the Big Bang, and how heavier elements were created through stellar nucleosynthesis. Students will learn about the composition of the universe, the nucleosynthesis epoch, and how nuclear fusion in stars led to the formation of new elements. Activities include summarizing information about topics, watching a video on balancing nuclear equations, and answering a chapter review test.

Learning Intent: The students can identify:

a. explain the formation of light elements in the Big Bang Theory;

b. describe the formation of the heavier elements during the star formation and evolution;
c. write the nuclear reactions that take place in the stars, which led to the formation of new elements; and
d. describe how elements heavier than iron are formed.

Instructional Strategies
A. Context

Chemical elements are principal for the existence of life and the abundance and diversity of our environment.
Hence, one of the basic questions concerns foundation of the chemical elements. The answer is intricate because it relies
on dynamic processes from elementary particles and cnuclei to stars and galaxies.
This module will guide you to explain the origin of elements from the lighter upto the heavier ones. It will give you a
wider understanding of how the elements were formed, starting from the big explosion up to the cosmic phenimena where
differet factors, such as temperature, pressure, and the amount of neutrons, have played a significant role.

B. Concept Notes

Among the proposed explanations on how the universe began, the Big Bang
Theory is the one currently accepted, theoritically. It describes that the universe stated
with a singularity defined simply as a point where all matter, time, space, laws of the
universe and reality itself are condensed—ultimtely inflating (not exploding) since
approximately 14 billion years ago untill now, according to NASA (National Aeronautics
and Space Administration.
Before the planet we live in right now came to existence as all other planets
and solar systems and galaxies, the earliest elements were formed first. Fig. 1 Composition of the Universe

Elements heavier than beryllium are formed through stellar nucleosynthesis. Stellar nucleosynthesis is the process
by which elements are formed within stars. The abundances of these elements change as the stars evolve.
Heavy elements can be formed from light ones by nuclear fusion reactions; these are nuclear reactions in which
atomic nuclei merge together. The simplest reactions involve hydrogen, whose nucleus consists only of a single proton,
but other fusion reactions, involving mergers of heavier nuclei, are also possible.
