11 Revision Notes Scalars and Vectors

Scalars are quantities that have only magnitude, such as mass, energy and speed. Vectors are quantities that have both magnitude and direction, such as acceleration, velocity and weight. When forces do not act in the same line, their resultant can be calculated using the triangle law or parallelogram law of vector addition. The triangle law states that the sum of two vectors is another vector obtained by placing the tail of one vector at the head of the other and completing the triangle. The parallelogram law states that the diagonal of a parallelogram formed by two vectors is the resultant of the two vectors.
