Let Us Study

Way to go! Let us level up!

Objective: 1. Identify the different sources of geothermal energy.

What Is Geothermal Energy?

Geothermal  energy  is  an  energy  produced  by  utilizing  heat  trapped
inside  the  earth  surface.  In  most  cases,  geothermal  energy  is not visible to
many  places  in  the  earth.  In  spite  of  that,  there  are  some  places  where
geothermal energy makes its way to the surface. Look at the illustrations of
volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, and fumaroles.
Can  you  identify  them  by  their  specific  characteristics?  (Use  a
separate sheet for your answers)

Direction:  Choose  the  correct  geothermal  energy  source  (geyser,  fumarole,
volcano, and hot spring) to complete the sentence.

1. A  ___________  is  a vent or a spring in earth’s surface that periodically
shoots out a column of hot water and steam.

2. A  ___________  is  a  hole  on earth’s surface from where the steam from
the earth comes out. These are usually found in volcanic regions.

3. A  ___________  is  a  vent  in  the earth’s crust in which hot, melted rock
comes out.

4. A  ___________  is  a  source  of  water  which  flows  out  a  temperature
higher than the average temperature.

Humans have always been fascinated with the fiery display of nature’s
power  in  volcano.  In  ancient  times,  volcanoes  are  believed  to  be  homes  of
temperamental  gods  or  goddesses.  Today,  science  tells  us  that  volcanoes
result  from  the  immense  heat  energy,  geothermal  energy,  found  in  Earth’s
interiors. Geo means earth and thermal means heat, thus geothermal energy
is the earth’s heat energy.

Geysers,  fumaroles  and  hot  springs  are  generally  found  in regions of
young  volcanic  activity.  Surface  water  drains  downward  through  the  rocks
below  the  Earth’s  surface  to  high-temperature  regions  surrounding  a
magma  reservoir,  either  active  or  recently  solidified  but  still  hot.  There the
water  is  heated,  becomes  less  dense  and  rises  back  to  the  surface  along
fissures  and  cracks.  Erupting  geysers  provide  spectacular  displays  of
underground  energy  suddenly  unleashed.  The  water, upon further heating,
is  violently  ejected  when  a  portion  of  it  flashes  into  steam.  Fumaroles,  on
the  other  hand,  emit  mixtures  of  steam  and other gases such as Hydrogen
Sulfide that when oxidizes to sulfuric acid and native sulfur can give intense
chemical  activity  and  brightly  colored  rocks  in  many  thermal  areas.  While
hot  springs  which  can  also  be  called  hydrothermal  spring  is  produced  by
the emergence of geothermally-heated groundwater that rises to the surface
of  thermal  areas.  Springs  contain  water  that  can  either  be  a  safe
temperature  for  bathing  or  hot  enough  that  immersion  can  be  harmful
leading to scalding to potentially, a death.

The  edges  of  the  continents  that  surround  the  Pacific  Ocean  (the
Pacific  “Ring  of  Fire”)  are  prone  to  earthquakes  and  volcanoes  and  have
some  of  the  best  geothermal  resources  in  the  world.  This  includes  the
western part of North, Central, and South America; New Zealand; Indonesia;
the  Philippines;  Japan;  and  Eastern  Russia.  These  countries  all  have
coastlines  that  sit  on  or  near  the  boundaries  of  tectonic  plates  in  which
most of the active volcanoes are located. Some of the other prime geothermal
locations include Iceland, Italy, the Rift Valley of Africa, and Hawaii.

Since  the  first  geothermally-generated  electricity  in  the  world  was
produced  at  Lardello,  Italy,  in  1904  the  use  of  geothermal  energy  for
electricity  has  grown  worldwide  to  about  7,000  megawatts  in 21 countries.
The  United  States  alone produces 2,700 megawatts in 21 countries around
the world.

Over  the  ages,  people  have  benefited  from  Earth’s  geothermal energy
by  using  the  hot  water  that  naturally  rises  up  to  the  earth’s  surface.  We
have  soaked  in  hot  springs  for  relaxation,  healing  and  to  some  regions  as
instant cooking pots.

Today  we  drill  wells  deep  underground  to  bring  hot  water  to  the
surface.  We  use  the  heat  energy  from  this  geothermal  water  to  warm
building  (through  geothermal  heat  pumps),  to  speed  the  growth  of  plants
and  fish,  and  to  dry  lumber, fruits and vegetables. We use the energy from
the hottest water to generate electricity (through geothermal power plants).

Let Us Practice

Very good! You made it this far! Let us continue rolling!  After honestly
answering this, you may check your answer in the Answer Key Section.
Objective:  (2) Explain the steps to generate electricity in a geothermal power
plant.
Activity 1: You Energize Me!
Geothermal energy is generated in two ways: geothermal power plants
and  geothermal  heat  pumps.  Geothermal  heat  pumps  use the heat coming
from close to the Earth’s surface to heat water or provide heat for buildings
while  geothermal  power  plants  use  heat  from  deep  inside  the  Earth  to
produce steam to generate electricity.
In  the  Philippines,  some  of  the  prevalent  places  wherein  geothermal
power  plants  are  used  to  generate  electricity  are  the  following:  Calaca
(Laguna),  Kidapawan  (North  Cotabato),  Bago  City  (Negros  Occidental),  Tiwi
(Albay), Valencia (Negros Oriental), Bacon (Sorsogon), and Tongonan (Leyte).
Geothermal power plant works as the heat from the magma increases
the  temperature  in  the  reservoir.   This  hot  high-pressure  water  is  then
pumped  from  the  reservoir  through  a  well.  At  a  point  when  the  water
reaches  the  surface,  the  pressure  drops,  causing  the  water  to  turn  into
steam.  The  steam  spins  a turbine, which is connected to a generator that
produces electricity (from mechanical energy to electrical energy).
The  transformer,  through  the  process  of  electromagnetic  induction,
transfers  then  the  electrical  energy  to  the  electric  mains  to  be  consumed
for  our  homes  and  buildings’  electricity.  Moreover,  the  steam  used  in  the
process  is  then  converted  back  into  its  liquid  state  through  a  condenser.
Finally,  the  cooled  water  in  the  cooling  tower  is  injected  or  pumped  back
into earth to begin the process again.

Geothermal Energy

sustainable development goal?
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________

___________________________________________________________________________

Let’s Discuss!

A geothermal system is described schematically as convecting water in
the upper crust of the Earth which in a confined space transfers heat from a
heat  source  to  a  heat sink usually the free space. This system is composed
of three main elements; a heat source, a reservoir, and fluid.

12
Moreover, a heat source can be either a very high temperature (above
600°C) magmatic intrusion that has reached a shallow depth of 5-10 km or
as  in  certain  low-temperature  systems,  the  Earth’s  normal  temperature
which  as  we  understand  increases  with depth. The reservoir is a volume of
hot  permeable  rocks  from  which  the  circulating  fluids  extract  heat.  This
component is generally below a blanket of impermeable rocks and connected
to a recharge area through which the meteoric waters can replace the fluids
that  escape  from  the  reservoir  through  springs  or  boreholes.  Finally,  the
geothermal fluid (water) is the carrier that transfers the heat. It often carries
with  it  other  chemicals  and  gas  compounds  such  as  carbon  dioxide,
hydrogen sulfide, etc.

Thus, geothermal power plant is like a regular power plant except that
no fuel is burned to heat water into steam. The steam in a geothermal power
plant is heated by the Earth. Like other power plants, they use many of the
same  components  including  turbines,  generators,  transformers  and  other
standard power operating equipment. The basic mechanism for each type of
geothermal power plant:

1. A  production  well  is  drilled  into  a  geothermal  reservoir.  To  allow
the return of used geothermal fluids to the geothermal reservoir, an
injection  well  is  also  drilled.  Hot  geothermal  fluids  flow  through
pipes to a power plant for use in generating electricity.
2. Hot  pressurized  geothermal  fluid  or  a  secondary  working  fluid  is
allowed  to  generate  rapidly  and  provide  rotational  or  mechanical
energy to turn the turbine blades on a shaft.
3. Rotational  energy from the turning turbine shaft is utilized to spin
the  magnets  inside  a  large  coil  and  eventually  create  electrical
current.  The  two  primary  pieces  of  equipment  used  to  convert
geothermal  energy  to  electrical  energy  are  the  turbine  and
generator.
4. Electrical  current  from  the  generator  is  sent  to  a  step-up
transformer  outside  the  power  plant  voltage  is  increased  in  the
transformer  and  electrical  current  is  then  transmitted  over  power
lines to homes, buildings, and business establishments.
