L I. LEARNING SKILL
a. Most Essential Learning Competency
Infers that wave carry energy (S7MT-IIIC-5)
b. Objective/s
• Define waves;
• Identify the parts of a wave;
• Infer how waves transfer energy; and
• Solve practical problem involving waves.
II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT
Waves occur all around you in the physical world. When you throw a stone into a lake,
water waves spread out from the splash. When you strum the strings of a guitar, sound waves
carry the noise all around you. When you switch on a lamp, light waves flood the room. Water,
sound, and light waves differ in important ways but they all share the basic properties of wave
motion. For instance, you can see water waves and surfers would say that they enjoy riding
the waves. On the other hand, you do not see sound waves and light waves but you
experience them in other ways. Your ears can detect sound waves and your skin can get
burned by ultraviolet waves if you stay under the sun for too long.
Getting to know the different properties and the importance of waves is a way to
understand different phenomena around us. Read on and perform the activities prepared for
you in this learning activity sheet.
III. ACTIVITIES
A. Practice Tasks
1. Activity
Directions: Read and analyze the given situation.
You and your close friend are playing at a side of a river. You see a toy boat
floating at a distance not within the reach of your friend. Your friend wants to move the
boat to reach it.
1
2. Analysis
Q1. How will you help your friend? What will you do to move the boat?
Q2. How would you generate water waves on the river?
Q3.Based on the activity, what is your idea about a wave?
Q4. What has made the boat move?
Q5. What is carried by the wave to make the boat move?
3. Abstraction
A wave is a disturbance propagated through a medium in which energy is
transferred. Waves do not transmit matter, but they transmit energy. While energy is
transported by virtue of the moving pattern, it is important to remember that there is
not net transport of matter in wave motion. The particles vibrate about a normal position
and do not undergo a net motion
There are two types of waves according to the movement of particles: the
transverse waves and the longitudinal waves. Transverse waves occur when the
individual particles or segments of a medium vibrate from side to side perpendicular to
the direction in which the waves travel. On the other hand, longitudinal waves occur
when the individual particles of a medium vibrate back and forth in the direction in
which the waves travel.
The anatomy of a wave is presented in the illustration

The speed, v, of the wave is the distance moved by a wave in one second.
Since the wave crest travels a distance of one wavelength in one period, the wave
speed,
ν = fλ
units of measurement:
wave speed = (frequency)(wavelength)
v is in meters per second (m/s)
f is in Hertz (Hz or /s)
λ is in meters (m)
Sample Problem
Waves in a lake have a wavelength of 0.5 meters and frequency of 2Hz. What
is the speed of the waves?
Given:
wavelength (λ) = 0.5 m
frequency (f) = 2Hz
Solution:
ν = fλ
= (2Hz) (0.5m)
= 1 m/s
4. Application
3
2. Suppose you observed an anchored boat to rise and fall once every 4.0 seconds
as waves whose crests are 25 meters apart pass by it.
B. Assessment
Directions: Identify what is asked or described in each item. Write the letter of the correct
answer.
