 Ensure that excavated trench is adequate safe for work environment.

 Ensure that provision of safe access is available prior to commence the job.
 Ensure the formation of pipe trench is well compacted, inspected and approved by engineer as per
approved excavation method statement
 Cutting pipes shall be done by an approved method and manufactures recommendation.
 Ensure the HDPE pipe welding is completed, inspected and approved as per approved method statement.

8.2 Storage and Lifting:

 After delivery of materials to the site, the pipe must be lifted strictly as per manufacture
recommendations.
 Pipes and fittings are heavy objects and care should be taken to ensure the quality of pipes and fittings is
not impacted during handling. When fork lift trucks are used for unloading pipes, ensure that the fork
blades do not damage the pipes.
 Lift the bundles one by one, using slings which surround the load and not by means of their retaining
straps.
 The storage area must be level. Avoid unstable ground or Corrosive soils

8.3 Deep Excavation and Confined Spaces:

8.4 Sand Bedding and Surround:

 Place the approved bedding sand over the prepared formation for a depth as shown on the approved
drawings. Minimum Bedding thickness shall be 150 mm, with side surround of 250 mm.
 Prior to pipe laying suitable depressions shall be formed in the sand bedding to accommodate the pipe
joints.

8.5 Pipe Laying:

The following precautions shall be taken during laying of pipes:
 The butt fusion welding preference shall be given to weld the pipes in most of the locations.
 Where the butt fusion welding is not possible at the junction location or at buried pipe location, the
electro fusion welding shall be preferred.
 The butt fusion and electro fusion welding shall be done as per approved Method Statement.
 The butt fusion jointing shall only be used to joint pipe of the same PE material with compatible melt flow
rate (MFR) and with the same nominal wall thickness and outside diameter.
 Ensure the pipes & fittings to be welded must be cleaned prior to welding.
 Ensure that the fitting is dimensionally appropriate for welding to the pipe.
 The welding locations of pipes shall be recorded for each location along with the co-ordinate and must be
marked on the drawing with unique joint number. The welding report of the same shall be documented
from the welding machine and shall be submitted to Engineer along with the inspection request for
approval.
 The welder shall maintain and update the record for the welding joints and shall handover to the QC /site
Engineer for record.
 During pipe laying operations the ends of the pipe shall remain sealed by pipe end caps, until immediately
prior to jointing.
 The induction of stresses in the pipe or in joints during installation shall be avoided.
 Prevent the pipe from being damaged by contact with sharp materials during installation.
 If the PE pipe is laid by drag, care shall be taken that the drag force is not exceeding the allowable force as
specified by the Manufacturer’s or supplier of the pipe material.
 The butt fusion machine should be sited within a shelter and the ends of the pipe being joined should be
covered or plugged to prevent through drafts.
 The pipe ends should be faced so that the finished surfaces are perfectly smooth free of visible ridges,
valleys or other surface imperfections.
 The outside diameters of the pipe ends should match closely without the offset exceeding 10%.

angles to the axis of the pipe.

8.6 Laying in Trenches:

 Laying of the pipe and making of connections shall be undertaken in a dry trench. Ground water level shall
be maintained at least 100mm below the bottom of each excavation
 Welding of all the joints should be completed on top of trench in case of trench width is not sufficient for
welding machine.
 Completed sections of welded pipes will be lifted gently and uniformly all along the length with the help
of crane/excavator or JCB and lowered in the trench.
 Ensure that the pipe is uniformly supported.
 Install the fittings with reference to layout shop drawing.
 Ensure that no stone or rock impingement exists at the pipe to soil interface.
 Immediately after installation, the pipe shall be partly backfilled with approved back fill materials PI less
than 2 with min CBR of 15.
 When pipe laying is not in progress, ensure that the pipe ends are at all times kept closed. The closed ends
shall only be removed for the purposes of making a connection of the pipe end or testing the pipeline
 Comply with the minimum allowable bending radius specified by the manufacturer.
 Particular care shall be taken to avoid any damage to pipe or fittings.

8.7 Backfilling:
 Backfill the trench in layer by layer as per approved method statement of excavation and backfilling works
and as per approved shop drawing.
 Back fill materials over the pipe shall comply with the requirements of Dwg BMP-001-045.
 All back fill materials shall be approved by the Engineer prior to its use on site.

8.8 DETECTABLE TAPE:

 Where required and as approved by the Engineer, pipes shall be adequately protected & marked using
150mm wide detectable tape.
 Tape shall be installed 300 mm above the pipe line.

Unacceptably High
8 - 12 High Risk Activity or industry should be modified to include remedial planning and
action and be subject to detailed HSE assessment
Acceptable but must be managed at “As Low As Reasonably Practicable”
4–6 Moderate Risk (ALARP) Activity or industry can operate subject to management and / or
modification
Acceptable without required further action
1 -3 Low Risk No action required unless escalation of risk is possible

Hierarchy of Control (Controls identified may be a mixture of the hierarchy in order to provide minimum operator exposure)
Elimination Eliminate the hazard.
Substitution Provide an alternative that is capable of performing the same task and is safer to use.
Engineering Controls Provide or construct a physical barrier or guard or technical measures
Administrative Controls Develop policies, procedures practices and guidelines, in consultation with employees, to mitigate the risk.
Provide training, instruction and supervision about the hazard.
Personal Protective Personal equipment designed to protect the individual from the hazard.
