Famous films that moved us (literally!)
Sometimes when you see a film, the scene is so strong, that it
makes you think that you need to go there one day. I gonna
tell about three different films right now. There’s a travel
information too, in case you would like to visit this places.

1. THE BEACH

The film named ‘THE BEACH” is set in the 1990s on a small

tropical island. It is based on a best-selling book, which is
about a young traveler who find a group op people living on
this island, but suddenly it turns into a nightmare.

Summary 1
The film was shot on the beautiful island near Phuket.
Nowadays it is visited more than a million tiurists every
year. Most of the hotels were dostroyed in 2004 by the
tsunami, but now everything is okay. You can reach this island
by a boat or small plane out of Phuket.

2. OUT OF AFRICA

The film won 7 Oscars. It is about a writer who goes to Africa

to help her husband. The role of main character plays Мэрил
Стрип. To her surprise, she finds herself falling in love with
the country. The film was based on an autobiographical novel.
The story is set in National Park in Africa. Apart from the
actors, the ‘stars’ of the film are animals and beautiful
nature. The film also has a really good soundtrack.

You can get there with car from Nairobi.

3. LORD OF THE RINGS

The trilogy of films won a total 17 Oscars. They are based on

the books written by Tolkien. They tell the story about
journeys of Hobbit Frodo and his friends with a magic ring,
which must be destroyed.

The story is set in an imaginary land, but all three films

were filmed in New Zealand. The director of the film, Питер
Джексон, was born there. This place is visited by thousands of
tourists every year.

To get there you need to fly to Окланд or Веллингтон and then

take a guided tour.

Would you like to live in a slow city?

The idea of ‘slow city’ was inspired by the slow food movement
in Chianti. The aim of Slow Cities is to make our towns places
where people enjoy living and working. Towns have to reduce
noise and increase the number of green areas. Also they have
to promote local businesses and traditions.
Many towns in Italy have joined the movement and it has spread
to other countries all over the world.

Summary 2
Slow Cities are about having community, about quality of life.
But such movement is quite hard for teenagers, because the
cannot buy everything they want in their city.

A gossip with the girls.

Women [вимэн] are experts at gossiping. However, some new
research suggests that when women talk to women they talk more
frivolous and cover a lot of topics (up to 40) than when man
talk to other man.

According to a phycologist at University College London, women

also tend to move from one subject to another in conversation,
whereas men prefer to speak only about one topic.

At work this difference can be an advantage for men. But on

the other hand, it can be difficult for them when in a meeting
people talk about several things in one time.

Also men and women chat for different reasons. Women chat to
solve problems and men to have a laugh or to swap opinions.

From librarian to political reporter.

The Pretenders is a very successful TV series. In each program
there is a contestant who has just 4 weeks to learn a new
profession. After they need to pass an exam.

Jessica is a 26-year-old librarian had 4 weeks to turn from

quiet librarian into a confident TV reporter. At her final
test she had a life TV interview with the Minister of
Education.
An experienced political journalist Adam Bowles and Sally
Lynch had the job of transforming Jessica. When they first met
her, they were not very optimistic, because Jessica was
absolutely different from a TV reporter.

The training was very hard. She was completely isolated from
family and friends and had to learn how to interview people,
to look more confident, to speak clearly and to learn about
the world of politics.

Summary 3
The secret to a long and happy life is - being
lazy.
According to Peter Axt, a German researcher and ex-marathon
runner, laziness is good for you.

As he said - no top sportsman has lived to a very advanced

age. Among the examples of athletes who have died young, he
mentions Jim Foxx, the author of The Complete Book of Running,
who died at the age of 52.
With his daughter Michaela who is a doctor, Peter has written
a book called The Joy of Laziness. It says that there are
three keys to long life: to play less sport, to reduce stress
and to eat less food.

His ideas are based on research which argues that animals have
only a limited amount of energy. Those who use up energy
quickly live for a shorter time.
However, Peter believes that light exercise is beneficial.

Making a complain - is it worth it?

Is it really worth it when goods or services are not
satisfactory? According to a new report from the consumer
magazine ‘Which?’ it certainly is. As they point out, the old
saying ‘if you don’t ask, you don’t get’ is true for many
situations. Particularly so when it comes to compensation.
Take the case of Mike Thomas, who bought a laptop, but 3 years
later he found that it was getting slower.
As the machine was no longer under guarantee, Mike called a
local repairer and was charged for more than 700 pounds. Then
Mike took the laptop to a retailer and they told him to buy a
new one.

Another customer’s experience shows that sometimes the local

company staff are unhelpful.
Mark Oakley wanted to buy a DVD player. At his local branch of
Argos, a shop which sells electrical goods, they told him that
they didn’t have this DVD player in stock, but the delivery

Summary 4
will be ‘soon’. However. it still hadn’t arrived, when he went
back.
He returned a few more times, but each time they told him to
come back in a week. After several weeks of visits and calls
Mark lost patience and wrote to the managing Director of
Argus.
‘Four days later, someone called me to say, that my DVD and 10
recordable DVD discs was waiting for me’ he said. ‘And when I
collected then I was treated like royalty’.

Visiting the Louvre.

Visiting the Louvre is a special experience, but you need to
know where to start. The first thing to recognize is that it
is huge and you can’t hope to see everything one day.

You can’t visit the Louvre and not see the Mona Lisa, so the
first tip would be to see it at first. When you have done
that, use the plan of the Louvre to look for the galleries
that sound most interesting for you. Spend your morning
visiting them. Then have a lunch and spend your afternoon
relaxing and finding surprises without looking at your map.
Also there are a toilets located on all floors and several
shops. Photography is permitted.
You can borrow an audio guide for a free. You have to leave a
credit card or passport as security. There are several stalls
offering audio guides, so you need to remember which one you
got it from.

The easiest way to enter the Louvre is via Metro entrance

because the queues are shorter.

So you want to be a film extra.

This week we talk to Rob Martin, who was written a book called
You Can Be A Movie Extra. He also has a company, The Casting
Collective, which was formed in 1999. His company finds work
for ‘extras’.
Rob said that people who have a more advantage appearance tend
to have more work. And people with some specific appearance

are only cast in more specific roles.

Working as an extra won’t lead to an Oscar, but it is a kind

of art form. The extras work a lot and there’s a lot of
waiting around.
So, what does it take to be an extra? Rob says ‘You have to
have a good sense of humor and you have to be able to get on
with people. You, as extra, need to not annoy the stars.

One of Rob’s extras, Nobuko Slater, has appeared as an extra,

but he hasn’t given up his day job. He said, that it all began
when he fancied doing something really different. He works as
extra for about 10 days a year but that suits him very well.
Another extra, Lucy Wallis, warns that this job is not very
glamorous.
Rob’s book which is packed with tips about the film and TV
industry, stressed that extras have to be prepared for
anything. And he adds: ‘Working as an extra doesn’t pay very
well, but it is unique and it is fun.

The teenager who changed world history.

History tells us about famous leader, Kings and Queens, but
what about the changes caused by unknown person?

For example, Gavrilo Princip. He was a Serb, born in Bosnia.

He’s health was very bad and he suffers from tuberculosis. He
studied in Belgrade where he spend most of his time with
nationalists who wanted a union between Bosnia-Herzegovina and
Serbia. He died at the age of 24.
So why is he so important? Well, he is a boy, who at age of
19, assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914.
Franz was going to the next Austro-Hungarian emperor and the
nationalists wants their country to be independent from the
empire. Gavrilo killed Archduke in his car and was captured by
the police. He died in prison of tuberculosis in 1918.

The assassination of Franz was the first direct cause of the

First World War. The war was ended in 1918 with the Treaty of

Versailles, that was very unfavorable for Germany. This, in
turn, resulted in Germany going to war again in 1939.
