Benefits of Dual Enrollment (DE)
• Eases the transition from high school to
college

• Provides the opportunity to earn high school


and college credit at the same time

• Saves students and parents money!


General Eligibility Requirements
● 11th or 12th grade students:
○ May enroll in an eligible Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG),
University System of Georgia (USG), and/or a private institution for
Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) courses and/or
degree level courses

● 10th grade students:


○ May only enroll CTAE courses at a participating TCSG institutions
■ Exception: 10th grade students who meet Zell Miller Scholarship
requirements (3.7 GPA plus 1200 SAT or 26 ACT in one testing
session) prior to the beginning of the term may enroll
in degree level classes
General Eligibility Requirements
● Academic Requirements
○ Must meet Academic Requirements of the college and intended
program of study
○ Most degree programs require 3.0+ unweighted GPA
■ (UNG is a 3.25 and UGA is a 3.9)
○ Most certificate/diploma programs require 2.6+ unweighted GPA

● Testing Requirements
○ Check current requirements for each school

● Admitted as a Dual Enrollment student to an eligible participating


college (USG, TCSG or private postsecondary institution)

Participation Requirements
● All courses must be on the Dual Enrollment Course Directory

● Georgia Student Finance Commission (GSFC) will fund a maximum of 30


semester hours. After reaching this max, a student may choose:
○ To self pay
○ To continue pursuing a program of study in one of the high demand
industry areas eligible for HOPE Career Grant

● DE students must be enrolled in 4 units of credit between the high


school and college
○ If a student is taking an on-campus DE class and an additional class
period is needed then an exception may be made to allow for 3 units
of credit
■ Must be aware of GHSA eligibility requirements
Participation Requirements
● Once a semester begins, students are able to withdraw from a college
course, however, there are unfavorable consequences:
○ Student will earn a permanent “W” on their college transcript
○ Student must return to BCHS for an equivalent course
■ Failure to do so will result in an ‘F’ on their BCHS transcript
■ If there is not an equivalent course, or there is not enough time
remaining in summer school, an ‘F’ would be placed on the high
school transcript
● Students become ineligible to receive funding from the DE program after
their second withdrawal from a class
● Students may not receive funding for the same course twice
Participation Requirements
● Each college is required to set Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) for each
semester.
○ Determined by a minimum GPA requirement AND a 67% completion rate
Cumulative Completed Hours
Completion Rate = = 100%
Cumulative Attempted Hours

● Failure to meet SAP for two semesters in a row will lead to financial aid
probation
○ Loss of federal, state, and local aid (HOPE, Zell, Pell, etc.)
○ Would follow a student post high school graduation

● If a student fails to meet SAP in one semester, that student will NOT
be allowed to participate in the DE program anymore
General Information
● Required EOCs
○ Lit 9, Algebra 1, and American Lit
● There are NO college course equivalents for Algebra II
● DE courses will become part of the student’s high school and college
permanent transcripts
● Courses may be taken outside of regular school hours
● DE students are NOT allowed on the BCHS campus unless they are scheduled
for a class
● Students may participate in summer sessions
General Information
● Transfer Credits
○ No guarantee that DE college credits will transfer to another
postsecondary institution
○ Determinations of transfer credit are made only by the receiving
institution.
○ Most colleges have a transfer equivalency tool
● Colleges will only communicate with students
● Students are responsible for ALL communication with BCHS and college
● Students are responsible for ALL syllabus requirements
● Students are responsible for knowing and abiding by
BCHS/college calendars
General Information
• Academic Incentives:
– +.5 GPA weight on degree level academic classes
– Degree level academic classes count as rigor for HOPE eligibility
– BCHS awards 10 pts for passing degree level classes

• For HOPE eligibility, the 10 pts are removed and the .5 is added to
determine unweighted academic GPA
Expenses/Limitations
• Per term max of 15 semester hrs and a max of 3 semesters per award year
• Standard college tuition rate is paid for all degree, diploma, and certificate
courses
• Colleges waive all mandatory fees

• Textbooks are covered through DE


– Books must be returned to avoid a HOLD on account and/or fees

• Student is responsible for any course-specific fees, such as lab fees

• DE credit hours will NOT be included in the HOPE scholarship


combined paid-hours limit.
FERPA
• Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

• Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records

• Applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of


the U.S. Department of Education

• Grants parents certain rights with respect to their children's education


records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the
age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level.
Extra-Curricular Activities
• Students can remain engaged at BCHS

• Students may participate in competitive high school events (sports,


clubs, band)
– Must pass 2.5 units of credit the semester prior to participation
and be on track for graduation to be eligible

• DE Remind and DE Google Classroom are provided to keep


students/parents informed
Dual Enrollment Procedures
1. Meet college admissions requirements
2. Schedule student/parent meeting with Ms. Cote
3. Submit college application and the following documentation:
a. Submit official high school transcript (Google Classroom)
b. Send test scores (SAT, ACT, or Accuplacer)
c. Submit proof of lawful presence (Driver’s License, US Passport, etc.)
d. Complete GSFC funding application (www.gafutures.org)
– Participation Agreement must be signed by student and parent
4. After college acceptance, meet with Ms. Cote to register for classes
5. Send Ms. Cote a copy of your college schedule
