PERFORMANCE TASK 1 - Coin Experiment

1) The document describes a coin toss experiment to be conducted in groups. Each group will toss 5 coins 20 times and record the number of heads in each trial. 2) Groups will construct a table showing the possible numbers of heads (0-5), frequency of each result, relative frequency, and actual probability. 3) Groups will compare the approximate probability values (relative frequencies) to the actual probability values and explain how to make them very close.

PERFORMANCE TASK 1

COIN EXPERIMENT
Objectives:
At the end of this task, you must be able to:
• Determine the sample space of an experiment.
• Illustrate random variables and its corresponding probabilities.
• Compare the relative frequency and actual probability.
• Show cooperation with your groupmates.

Description:
Based on your previous knowledge, an experiment is any activity that can be done
repeatedly under similar conditions. In the experiment, you can identify the set of all possible
outcomes which can be called the sample space.
In this task, your knowledge about the random variable and probability distribution will be
needed.

Procedures:
1. The class will be divided into five groups.
2. Toss 5 one – peso coins. Each group should perform this experiment 20 times.
Note: There is a possibility of repeating outcomes.
3. In a short bond paper, list down the results in every trial. Refer to this format.
Number of Trial Result
1st H, H, T, H, T
2nd H, H, T, T, H

4. Observe the number of heads that will occur. Determine the possible values of X or the
number of heads in 5 – coin tosses.
5. Construct the given table in a short bond paper. Follow the format given below:
Number Frequency of Relative Frequency Actual

6. Answer the following.

a. Compare the approximate probability values and the actual probability values.
b. How would you make the approximate probability values very close to the actual
probability values?
7. Your answers must be on short bond paper/s. Output must be handwritten. Then, follow
the guidelines below:
7.1. The content of your group output are as follows:

7.1.5. Table for the number of heads, frequency, relative frequency, and actual
probability (refer to procedure #5).
7.1.6. Answers for number 6, letter a & b.
7.1.7. Rubrics for checking EXCEPT peer evaluation.
7.2. Scan or take a clear picture of your output and paste it in MS Word. Please convert
the final output into PDF file and submit or upload it (one output per group) to the MS
Form link found at PETA & MIDTERM ASSESSMENT channel.
7.3. File name of your output should be like this: PETA1_Group#.
7.4. The deadline for PETA 1 and peer evaluation will be a week after the performance
task has been given and discussed. Note: Failure to accomplish the peer evaluation
means that you will automatically incur 0 as score for the peer evaluation.
