Meaning

The word measures means ‘methods’ and the word Central Tendency means ‘average value’ of any
statistical series. The , the combined term measures of central tendency means the methods of finding
out the central value or average value of a statistical series or any series of quantitative information.

Definitions

According to Croxton and Cowden, “An averages value is a single value within the range of the
data that is used to represent all the values in the series. Since an average is somewhere within the
range of the data, it is sometimes called a measure of central value.”

In the words of Clark, “Average is an attempt to find one single figure to describe whole of
figures.”

Characteristics

1. It is a single figure expressed in some quantitative form.

2. It lies between the extreme values of a series
3. It is a typical value that represents all the values of a series
4. It is capable of giving a central ideal about the series it represents
5. It is determined by some method or procedure.

Essentials of a Good Average

 It should have clear Definition – The definitions of an average should be clear and
unambiguous. It should be defined in the form of an algebraic formula, so that each
person calculating the average from a set of data, arrives at the same figure.
 It hold be simple to understand and easy to calculate – An average should be simple
so that everybody could able to understand without any dubious meaning. The method for
calculation of average should be such that everybody can calculate the same in an easier
way.
 It should be based on all the observations – Average is not representative unless the
entire data are taken for its calculation. So in order to make an average ideal it should be
based on all the items of the series.
 It should be suitable for further mathematical treatment – An ideal average should
possess some important mathematical property, so that it will be easier on the part of
person using the same for further mathematical or statistical analysis. By no way the use
of the average figure should be restricted for single purpose rather by that average can be
used for calculation of other statistical measures like dispersion, correlation, regression
and others.
 It should not be affected by extreme items – In a sample, there may be wide variation
of figures. The extreme items i.e., highest values and lowest values, are of much higher or
lower than other values. In such case, the average so calculated will be greatly influenced
by these extreme values and it cannot be treated as the true representative of the whole
distribution.

Weighted Average
Weighted average is a calculation that takes into account the varying degrees of importance of
the numbers in a data set. In calculating a weighted average, each number in the data set is
multiplied by a predetermined weight before the final calculation is made.

Illustration 1
Person carpets the three rooms of his house as follows : by The 15 by 20 metre room with
carpeting costing 30 per square metre the 12 by 15 metre room with carpeting costing 18
per square metre and the l5 by 15 metre room with carpeting costing 12 per square metre.
Find the average price that he pays for a square metre of carpeting .

Solution

Area of the first room = 15 x 20 300 square metre

Area of the second room = 12 x 15 = 180 square metre
Area of the third room = 15 x 15 = 225 square metre
The rates of carpeting the three rooms are decided according to their importance. That is
weights are assigned to each room in terms of rate per square:
Area rate of carpeting expenditure
300 30 9000
180 18 3,240
225 12 2,700
705   14,940
average = 14,940 / 705 =7 21.19

A person bought 40 tables at an average price of 88 per table. He bought Smilar 20 tables at an average
price of 106 per table. Find the average price of all the tables.
Solution
The average price of 40 tables
the average price of each table = 88
Total price of 40 tables = 88 X 40 = 3,520

The average price of 20 tables

the average price of each table) = 106
Than Total price of 20 tables = 106 x 20 = 2,120

Total price of 60 tables = 3,520 + 2,120 = 5,640

Average price per table = 5640 / 60 =94

A 20 sets was 7,750 and that of the remaining type B was 15,000.Find the total number of television sets
purchased.
Total television set = X
Each cost = 12500
Total cost = 12500 * x = 12500x

Type A = 20
Each cost = 7750
Total cost = 20* 7750 = 155000

Type B = x -20
Each cost = 15000
Total cost = ( x – 20 ) * 15000
= 15000x - 300000

Total cost = type A cost + type B cost

12500x = 155000 + 15000x – 300000

300000 -155000 = 15000x - 12500x

145000 = 2500x
145000 / 2500 = x
X = 58 ,A =20 , B = 58-20 = 38

T.RAMA KRISHANA RAO (8839271225)

Solution
Let the no. of students previously be n …(1)
Total age = n x 15 = 15 n
Then No. of students = n +5
Now average age = 15 - 0.5 = 14.5 ..(2)
Total age = (n + 5) x 14.5 = 14.5 (n + 5) ...(3)
The total age of 5 new boys = 5 x 12.5 = 62.5
From (1), (2) and (3),
14.5 (n +5) - 62.5 = 15n
14.5n + 72.5 - 62.5 = 15n
15n-14.5n = 10

Solution
Average temperature of the first 3 days ofa week = 27°C
Total temperature of the first 3 days of the week = 3x 27 = 81'C
Average temperature of the next 3 days of a week = 29°C
Total temperature of the next 3 days of the week = 3 x 29 = 87°C
Total temperature of 6 days of a week = 81 +87 = 168'C
Total temperature of the week = 7 x 28.5 = 199.5 C

The average monthly salary of 8 workers and 1 supervisor in a factory was? 195. The
supervisor was getting a monthly salary of 300 retired and a new supervisor was appointed
in his place as a result of which the average monthly salary of the factory workers reduced
to 185. Calculate the monthly salary of new Supervisor.

Solution
Average monthly salary of 8 workers and 1 supervisor =195
Total salary of these 9 persons= 9x 195 = 1,755
Total salary after the retirement of the supervisor == 1,755 -300 = 1,455
Let the salary of new supervisor be x.
Total salary after the entry of new supervisor = (1,455 + x)
Average salary after the entry of new supervisor = 185
total salary = 9 x 185 = 1,665
1,455 + x = 1,665
Hence,
X = 1,665 - 1,455 =210

Total age of (4 + 2 ) 6 members = 24 x 6 = 144 years

Total age of the 2 children = 144 - 136= 8 years
Let the age of the younger child be x.
The age of elder child = x + 2 years
x + (x+2) = 8
2x + 2 =8
2x = 8 – 2
X= 6 / 2

The average age of eight men is increased by 2 years, when two of them, whose ages are 20
and 24 years, are replaced by the two women. What is the average age of the women?

Solution
Let the average age of the 8 men be x years.
Total age of these 8 men = 8x years
Total age of 6 men (when 2 men have gone) = 8x - (20+ 24) = (8x - 44) years
Average age of 8 persons (when 2 men are replaced by 2 women) == (x + 2) years
. Total age of 6 men and 2 women = (x +2) * 8 = (8x + 16) years
Total age of 2 women= 8x + 16- (8x - 44) = 8x+16 - 8x + 44 = 60 years
Average age of 2 women = 60/2 =30 years.

30 persons live in a hotel. On an increase of 10 persons, monthly expenses of food increase
by 7 60 but average monthly expenses are reduced by 1. Find out what was the earlier
monthly expenditure of hotel for 30 persons?

Solution
Let the monthly average expenditure of 30 persons= x
Total monthly expenditure of 30 persons = 30x
Average monthly expenditure of 4O(30 + 10) persons = x - 1
Total monthly expenditure of these 40 persons = 40 (x-1)
According to the question,
40( x - 1) - 30x = 60
40x- 40-30x = 60
10x =100
X= 10
Required earlier total expenditure = 30 x 10 300

The average temperature of a place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday was
found to be 58C and average temperature on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday was
62"C. If the ratio of temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday is 15:19 find the
temperature on these days.

Solution
Total temperature of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday =4 x 58'C = 232°C
Total temperature of Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday =4 x 62'C = 248°C
On subtraction, difference is the temperature of Thursday and Wednesday = 16°C
temperature of Wednesday = x
temperature of T'hursday = y
y – x = 16 ………(1)
x : y = 15: 19
x = 15y / 19 ………(2)
from (1) and (2)

y – (15y / 19 ) = 16
y = 76
x=60
Temperature of Wednesday = 60°C
Temperature of Thursday = 76°C

The income of a business in six years is in the ratio of2:3: 4: 5:6: 7. If the average income of
these six years is 7 3,375, calculate the income of each year.

Solution
Total Income = No. of years x Average income
= 6 x 3,375 = 20,250
Ratio's total = 2 +3 + 4+5 +6+7 = 27
The income of first year = (2 / 27) x 20,250 =1,500
The income of second year = ( 3 / 27 ) x 20,250 = 2,250
The income of third year = (4 / 27 ) x 20,250 = 3,000
The income of fourth year = (5 / 27 ) x 20,250 = 3,750
The income of fifth year = (6 / 27 ) x 20,250 =4,500
The income of sixth year = (7 / 27 ) x 20,250 =5,250
1500 +2250 +3000 +3750 +4500+ 5250 = 20,250
