What I Need to Know
After years of explorations, more places on Earth were discovered. It is a place filled
with different landforms and bodies of water that make up the landscape. But do you
know how these places on Earth located using a Coordinate System?
This module will provide you with information and simple activities that will help
you understand how places on Earth be located using the Coordinate System.

What’s New
In this lesson, you will learn to locate places on Earth using the Coordinate
System. To locate different places you will use a globe or a map. One way by which we
can locate and describe the location of a certain place is by determining its latitude and
longitude. You must learn how to figure out the latitude and longitude of a certain place.
Try to study the image of a globe below and be ready to identify the parts labeled in the
image. What is the reference line when determining the latitude? What is the reference
line when determining the longitude?

What is It
Coordinate System is a system used to locate points on the surface of the Earth
just as longitude and latitude. These lines of latitude and longitude form an imaginary
grid on Earth.
Latitudes are horizontal lines that are parallel to the equator in an East-West
direction around the globe. The equator is at zero latitudes, the North Pole is at 90 north
and the South Pole is at 90 south.
Longitudes are vertical lines that intersect the line of the equator and latitudes.
It runs from pole to pole in a north-south direction around the globe. The line of longitude
at 180 West coincides with the line of longitude at 180 East. Longitudes locate places
West or South of the Prime Meridian.
Prime Meridian or the Greenwich Line lies across Greenwich, England, and mark
zero degrees. It is known as the International Date Line, an imaginary line on the surface
of the earth that runs from the north to the south pole and demarcates one calendar day
from the next. The International Date Line passes through the middle of the Pacific Ocean
following 1800 longitude.
The Equator an imaginary line running Easts and West direction where the
diameter of the globe is greatest. It divides the globe into halves: the Northern
Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere. There are four hemispheres; Northern,
Southern, Eastern, and Western. The latitude of the equator is zero.
Arctic Circle is the parallel of latitude located approximately 66.5 0 North of the
equator. It marks the boundary of the zone where the sun never sets during the June
solstice and never rises during the December solstice.
Tropic of Cancer is the parallel of latitude located 23º27 ’ North of the equator. This
line marks the Northernmost point at which the sun appears directly overhead. This
occurs yearly during the June solstice.
Tropic of Capricorn is located 23.50 South of the equator. This line marks the
Southernmost point at which the sun appears directly overhead. This occurs yearly
during the December solstice.
Areas within the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn are called Tropic.
Countries in these zone experience a tropical climate where the annual average
temperature is above 180 C.
Areas within the Arctic Circle are called the Polar Regions or Frigid Zones, the
temperature in these areas never goes above 10 0 C. It is cold all year round and even
during the summer months.
5
Areas between the Tropic of Cancer and the Arctic Circle are the Northern
Temperature Zone; between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Antarctic Circle is the
Southern Temperature Zone. Countries in these zones go through four seasons-Winter,
Spring, Summer, and Autumn.
