Lab9-Wifi Infrastructure Mode With AP
Lab9-Wifi Infrastructure Mode With AP
Objectives:
This lab introduces students to the wireless infrastructure mode which is
different than the peer-to-peer (or ad-hoc) mode that they have seen
before. In infrastructure mode, all mobile and wireless client devices and
computers communicate with the access point, which provides the
connection from the wireless radio frequency world to the hard-wired
LAN world.
-
Part 1: Understanding the Access point
The access point is a device that links a wireless network to a wired LAN. It increases the
effective range of a wireless network and provides additional network management and security
features. Wireless networks of three or fewer PCs do not require an access point for ad hoc
networking. Access points are useful for larger networks, and they are particularly well-suited
for adding wireless capability to an existing wired network.
Part 2: setup the AP mode for the Access Point (AP)
When do we need to configure AP mode? Sometimes we have one wired router, and we want to
access the Internet wirelessly on laptop, the AP mode of the AP can help you to achieve it.
In this mode, this device works as an access point to transform your existing wired network into
a wireless network.
The connection topology as follows
10. Note down your WiFi name and password on this page and click Save to apply your settings.
Wait until the device restarts successfully.
11. After configuration, connect AP to your uplink router with a cable
12. Please find the name of your wireless network and connect to it. It will ask you for a
password, please type password and click Ok to connect.
Part 3: Setup the Repeater mode for the Access Point (AP)
In this mode, the AP can extend the WiFi range of the uplink ADSL modem or router. It’s an
ideal solution for large house, villa, eatery, store, etc. In other words, it extends your existing
wireless coverage by relaying wireless signal.
The Steps are as below:
1. Select Universal Repeater mode on Quick Setup page and click Next
2. Click the Scan button, select the remote SSID (WiFi name) from the list and click Next.
3. The security mode will be selected automatically, please confirm it and enter the WiFi
password of the uplink ADSL modem or router in the Key field and click Next
4. Make sure the IP address is a different one but on the same network segment as that of the
uplink ADSL modem or router and click Next.
5. Note down your SSID (WiFi name) and WiFi password on this page and click Save to apply
your settings. Wait until the device restarts successfully.
6. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router and move the Access Point to a location where
it will be best used as a repeater. It needs to be within the range of the existing router and will
repeat the signal from there.
