Lab9-Wifi Infrastructure Mode With AP

This document summarizes instructions for setting up a wireless access point in infrastructure mode and repeater mode. In infrastructure mode, the access point links a wireless network to a wired LAN, extending the range of the wireless network. The steps include connecting the access point to a computer with an Ethernet cable, configuring the IP addresses, and selecting AP mode to broadcast the wireless network. In repeater mode, the access point extends the range of an existing wireless network by repeating the uplink router's signal. The steps are scanning for the remote SSID, entering the password, selecting a different IP address on the same network segment, and disconnecting the access point from the router to repeat the signal within range.

Lab 8: Wireless Infrastructure mode

Compiled by Nayla Greige & Hanna Daoud

Edited by Dr Riad Saba

Objectives:
This lab introduces students to the wireless infrastructure mode which is
different than the peer-to-peer (or ad-hoc) mode that they have seen
before. In infrastructure mode, all mobile and wireless client devices and
computers communicate with the access point, which provides the
connection from the wireless radio frequency world to the hard-wired
LAN world.

-
Part 1: Understanding the Access point
The access point is a device that links a wireless network to a wired LAN. It increases the
effective range of a wireless network and provides additional network management and security
features. Wireless networks of three or fewer PCs do not require an access point for ad hoc
networking. Access points are useful for larger networks, and they are particularly well-suited
for adding wireless capability to an existing wired network.
Part 2: setup the AP mode for the Access Point (AP)
When do we need to configure AP mode? Sometimes we have one wired router, and we want to
access the Internet wirelessly on laptop, the AP mode of the AP can help you to achieve it.
In this mode, this device works as an access point to transform your existing wired network into
a wireless network.

The connection topology as follows

The Steps are as below:

1. Connect the AP to power supply.

2. Connect your computer to the AP directly with an Ethernet cable
3. Click Open Network and Sharing Center. Click Ethernet > Properties
4. Find and double click Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)
5. Select Use the following IP address, type in the IP address: 192.168.0.x (2~253), Subnet
mask: 255.255.255.0 and click OK.
6. Login to the homepage of AP through type http://192.168.0.254 in the address bar.
7. Enter the default user name and password (admin for both) and click Login.
8. After login successfully, Please select the proper operating mode according to your needs and
click Next to finish mode settings
9. Select AP mode on Quick Setup page and click Next. Change the SSID to tenda_28484F
(SSID is the name of wireless network, you can name it by yourself). Set a WiFi password
for your local network and click Next.

10. Note down your WiFi name and password on this page and click Save to apply your settings.
Wait until the device restarts successfully.
11. After configuration, connect AP to your uplink router with a cable
12. Please find the name of your wireless network and connect to it. It will ask you for a
password, please type password and click Ok to connect.

Part 3: Setup the Repeater mode for the Access Point (AP)
In this mode, the AP can extend the WiFi range of the uplink ADSL modem or router. It’s an
ideal solution for large house, villa, eatery, store, etc. In other words, it extends your existing
wireless coverage by relaying wireless signal.
The Steps are as below:

1. Select Universal Repeater mode on Quick Setup page and click Next
2. Click the Scan button, select the remote SSID (WiFi name) from the list and click Next.

3. The security mode will be selected automatically, please confirm it and enter the WiFi
password of the uplink ADSL modem or router in the Key field and click Next

4. Make sure the IP address is a different one but on the same network segment as that of the
uplink ADSL modem or router and click Next.
5. Note down your SSID (WiFi name) and WiFi password on this page and click Save to apply
your settings. Wait until the device restarts successfully.
6. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router and move the Access Point to a location where
it will be best used as a repeater. It needs to be within the range of the existing router and will
repeat the signal from there.
