KING RUFO - Problem Set Conversion

The document provides examples of using dimensional analysis to convert between different units of measurement. It includes problems converting between kilometers and miles, centimeters and inches, liters and cubic centimeters, temperature between Fahrenheit, Celsius and Kelvin, speed between miles per hour and meters per second, length, volume, density, mass and more. Dimensional analysis techniques are demonstrated for setting up unit conversion proportion ratios.

CONVERSION OF UNITS USING DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS

A US Airways flight leaves Philadelphia in the early evening and arrives in Frankfurt 8.05 hours later.
The airline distance from Philadelphia to Frankfurt is about 6.6 x 103 km, depending to some extent
on the flight followed. What is the average speed of the plane in km/hr?

6600 km 8.05
÷ = 819.875 km/hr
8.05 hrs 8.05
A red blood cell has a diameter of 7.5 micrometers. What is the diameter of the cell
in inches? 1 inch = 2.54 cm.

10000 μm
_________ 1 inch
7.5 μm x = 0.00075 cm x _______ = 0.0002952755906 inches
1 cm 2.54 cm
1.28 L to cm3

1000 cm^3 x 1.2 L = 1280 cm^3

A student has entered a 10.0km run. How long is the run-in miles?
1 km= 1000 m
1m= 1.094 yd
1 mi= 1760 yd

1 mi
x 10.0 km = 6.21371 mi
1.60934 km
An aluminum foil is found to be 8.0 x 10-5 cm thick. What is its
thickness in micrometers?

1 cm
x 8.0 x 10^-5 cm = 0.8 µm

A recipe for apple pie calls for a preheated 350 0F oven. Express
this temperature setting in 0C and K. Round off your answer into
2 sf.

(350°F − 32) × 5/9 = 176.667°C

(350°F − 32) × 5/9 + 273.15 = 449.817K

The concord is the fastest airline used from commercial service.
It can cruise at 1450 miles/hr. What is the cruise speed in m/s?
1 mile = 1.609 km

1450 mi 1609 m 1 hr
x x = 648.07 m/s
1 hr 1 mi 3600 sec
The density of copper is 8.96g/cm3. What is the mass of a cube of copper
that is 2.54cm on one side?

mass = volume x density

mass = 16.39cm^3 x 8.96g/cm^3

mass = 146.85 g
A piece of silver metal weighing 194.3g is placed in a graduated cylinder
containing 242.0mL of water. The volume of water now range 260.5mL.
From this data, calculate the density of silver? Express your answer in 4
significant figures.

Density=m/v
v= 260.5mL-242.0=28.5mL
density= 194.3g/18.5

= 10.50g/mL
A waterbed filled with water has the dimension 8.0ft x 7.0ft x 0.75ft. Taking
the density of water to be 1.00 g/cm3, how many kg of water are required to
fill the waterbed?

1 ft = 30.8 cm
volume of waterbed= 246.4 x 215.6 x 23.1= 1115600.64 cm^3
=(1.00g/cm^3)(1115600.64 cm^3)

= 1115.60064 kg
