Product Overview

1 Product Overview

This document describes the Power Distribution Unit (PDU).

Information about the placement in the Radio Base Station (RBS) cabinet can
be found in RBS Description.

1.1 Purpose
The PDU is the internal power distribution unit in the RBS. The main function
of the PDU is to distribute -48 V DC power to DC-powered units in the RBS.
The PDU works as an internal distribution unit within a cabinet. It receives one
feeding of input voltage connector and distributes the input voltage to separate
fused outputs through output connectors.

1.2 Variants
Table 1 lists the different PDU variants.

2 Function Description

This section describes the functions for the PDU variants.

2.1 PDU 01 01
This PDU has the following functions:

• Controlling power distribution (see Section 2.3 on page 6)

• System voltage measurement

• Selecting fuse trip values (by hardware cable) : 6, 10, and 20 A

• System Voltage Test Port

2.3 Power Distribution Control

The Priority Load, Cold-Start, and Remote Control functions are used to
control the PDU. The PCR hardware selector in the PDU is used to configure
the different functions.

2.3.1 Priority Load Function

When battery voltage drops below a specified level, the Priority Load function
prioritizes the outputs configured as Prio. When the Battery Fuse Unit (BFU)
signal is received, PDU disconnects all outputs not configured as Prio.

The P switch has the following settings:

6 7/1551-LZA 701 6001 Uen D | 2010-05-21

Function Description

Prio load P switch in upper position

Main load P switch in lower position

2.3.2 Cold-Start Function

At start up, the PDU checks the input signal for the Cold-Start function. When
this signal is detected at start up, the PDU only turns on the outputs configured
as cold outputs.

The cold-start signal is only read during start up.

Remaining outputs will be turned on when the cold-start signal is ceased.

The C switch has the following settings:

Cold start configured C switch in upper position

Non-cold start configured C switch in lower position

Note: For outdoor RBS without heater all cold-start switches must be in upper
position.

2.3.3 Remote Control Function

The Main Processor (MP) can control the output when the switch in the PDU
is configured as remote controllable.

The R switch has the following settings:

Remote controllable R switch in upper position

Non-remote controllable R switch in lower position

2.3.4 Software Control

Each output voltage is equipped with an E-FUSE function. The E-FUSE
function provides overload and short circuit protection.

When the R switch is set to the upper position (remote controllable), the
E-FUSE can be configured in the software.

Note: If the switch is set to the lower position, the function cannot be remotely
controlled.

The E-FUSE function can be set in the following two ways:

• Persistent control (same function as using the button on the PDU)

7/1551-LZA 701 6001 Uen D | 2010-05-21 7

PDU Description

• Temporary commands (active output control function that overrules the

persistent settings) that consists of Temporary Control Enabled and
Temporary On

Table 2 lists examples of different Persistent Control, and Temporary Command

configurations.
