King Salman Airbase Project Royal Saudi Air Force: Page of

This document provides an addendum to tender documents for the King Salman Airbase Project in Saudi Arabia. It specifies additional geotechnical field testing and laboratory tests that are required, including geophysical surveys, plate load testing, piezometers, permeability tests, and trial pits. It also adjusts the requirements for soil materials to be used as backfill and fill, specifying classification groups and properties for suitable materials. Contractors must submit a detailed method statement of works for approval.

SECTION EARTHWORK

SOIL MATERIALS – A. Backfill and Fill Materials

The requirements shall be adjusted as follows:
1. Suitable Material:
- Suitable Material: Soil Classification Groups GW, GP, GM, SW, SP, and SM according to ASTM D 2487 or
Groups A-1, A-2-4, A-2-5 according to AASHTO M 145, or a combination of these groups; free of rock or
gravel larger than (75 mm) in any dimension, debris, waste, vegetation, and other deleterious matter. The
material shall have a maximum Liquid limit of 25 and maximum Plasticity Index of 10 .
- Suitable Material for Airfield and Roadway Construction: AASHTO M 145 soil classification groups A-1,
A-2-4, A-2-5, and A-3 when confined in the middle of embankment, or a combination of these group
symbols; free of debris, waste, vegetation, and other deleterious matter, and conforming with the following
requirements. A-3 material shall not be used within the outer 2 meters of the embankment at the slope
locations. When, in exceptional circumstances, soils in the foregoing classification groups are not available,
soil classification groups A-2-6, A-2-7, A-4, and A-5, or a combination of these group symbols may be
utilized, subject to compliance with all other specified requirements.
- Maximum Size: Not more than half of placement layer thickness.
- Organic Matter: Not more than 5 percent; AASHTO T 267.
- Maximum Dry Density: Not less than 1.7; AASHTO T-180 (Method D).
- 4-day soaked CBR: Not less than 8 percent; (AASHTO T 193) when compacted at 100 max. dry
density in accordance with AASHTO T-180 (Method D), except for the top 60cm of the embankment
located within the graded strips of the runway, taxiways and roadways, as well as under the aprons
