ABSTRACT

Title: The Importance of having Limitation on Internet Usage of the High school Students

of Little Child Jesus Christian Academy

Researchers: Sarabel Maraguinot and Kristine Marie Paral

Institution: Little Child Jesus Christian Academy

Year: 2019

The Internet is a technology that has become an enormous part of people’s daily

lives. As the years pass by, Internet connectivity has improved tremendously and is

available everywhere such as homes, school, work and many more. Today, Internet can

also influence the physical, psychological and academic performance of a student.

However, studies on Internet use among High school students are uncertain whether the

impact of using it will make their performance better or worst. Primary data were

obtained from a random selection of 100 High school students. The data were collected

using a questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statics.

Objectives of the Study

The main objective of the study is to analyze the internet use and its effect on the

performance of the High school students of Little Child Jesus Christian Academy.

1. To identify how long and their reasons of using the Internet.

2. To identify the possible effect of internet on their physical, psychological and

academic performance.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

The Internet is also known as a global system of computer networks and

information, a superhighway which have become a very important tool and required by

the knowledge-based society present the contemporary for information management,

information search, communication, and research and learning.

Exposure to new technologies provides many benefits for everyone. It also

includes benefits that can be gained by students through the development of the internet

as a medium of learning. Most of the students adopted digital media as a place for those

seeking information materials, as the main source of current issues as well as a platform

for sharing information with partners such as through social networking sites.

Therefore, using the Internet, things are easier for students to obtain the desired

information easily and quickly. However, if the use of the Internet is not controlled

properly, it will have a negative impact on the student’s performance. This indicates that

the impact of internet on a student’s performance is based on how did long did they used

it, because there are some students who use the Internet for non-academic purposes

such as gaming, social networking, shopping other activities.

1
LITTLE CHILD JESUS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

According to George Herbert Mead’s theory of social learning, a child only

imitates its idol. Simply, if all users of internet were good example to each other, risk

results must have been prevented.

This study focused on the high school students of Little Child Jesus

Christian Academy. Testing its knowledge about the internet and the prevention they will

apply to prevent internet addiction.

Background of Study

In the past 20 years, Internet has become an integral part of our lives and an

important tool for social interaction and communication. Access to the Internet is very

easy and affordable which causes a rapid growth of users from different countries. In the

year of 2019, there are 4.39 billion Internet Users in 2019, with an increase of 366 million

(9%) versus the rate at January 2018. There are 3.48 billion social media users in 2019,

with the worldwide total growing by 288 million (9%) since the time last 2018.

Excessive internet use results a negative impact to the health of users. Signs and

symptoms of Internet Addiction (IA) include preoccupation, mood swings, greater time

spent and functional impairment or negative consequences due to excessive use. IA

may include internet gaming and other forms of addictive internet usage which include

excessive downloading, use of social networking sites and online shopping.

For young people, poor social support and social isolation have been shown to

result in IA. Furthermore, IA may also have a negative impact on social skills and

2
LITTLE CHILD JESUS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

interpersonal relationship. Mostly, people who suffer IA are often shy or lack of social

skills.

The first reports regarding excessive use of the computers date back to the

1970s and by the 1980s it was reported that computer games might have an addictive

potential. It was a type and defined as a non-chemical addiction involving human-

machine interaction.

This study was chosen by the researchers to renew the knowledge of the

students, parents and also the teacher who’ve been using internet as one of their

instruments in teaching, entertainment and information. Researchers focused on the side

effect of having limitless surfing whether it is for good or for bad, still the side effect is

worse.

Theoretical Framework

Mead’s theory of Social Learning

According to George Herbert Mead’s theory of social learning, children begin to

perceive themselves from the perspective of the generalized other, the community as a

whole. Knowing the norms and values of society, children can begin to know how their

actions are perceived by the generalized other. Mead said that everyone has an “I” and a

“me.” The “I” is the individual or the true self and the “me” is the way one acts in different

social situations under the norms of society. Through social interaction, people learn the

3
LITTLE CHILD JESUS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

acceptable “me.” Mead felt that children develop their “selves” through social interaction.

Children begin to pattern their “selves” after the role model.

Assumed Theory:

Where; I= true self, m= me/society, s= selves, g= positive effect, b= negative

effect, and E= mentor

E= m + g – b

s= E + I

Note: “selves” is the grownup “I” /true self

The theory can be applied as we, the society or community, will mentor the

positive effects on children. The mentor acts as the generalized other and serves as a

role model to the student who begins to imitate the mentor. This then reflects the positive

effect of mentoring. The student changes his/her “me” to conform to the norms of

society, and the mentor is the role model whom the student uses to pattern his/her “me.”

Scope and Limitation

The scope of this study is to give enlightenment to the Internet users especially to

the High school student the possible result of the limitless usage of internet to its

physical health, to its mental health and to its social life.

This study focused on the knowledge about awareness on internet usage of the

51% of randomly selected High school students of Little Child Jesus Christian Academy

(LCJCA).

Significance of Study

This study serves as an enlightenment to internet users. As of nowadays, most

people around the world were using internet. Above all, researchers focused on the

common users of internet other than students, for them also be aware how harmful

internet was.

Students

Technology can be widely used in many areas, especially in the field of

enhancing one’s knowledge. Internet is a great instrument every student can have. For

this purpose, internet is the library of students which was really helpful to their studies.

8
LITTLE CHILD JESUS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

However, internet can also give entertainment to its user and the best example of

it was online video games. Online video games are addictive to students which may

cause change in sleeping patterns, socially out dated and academic skills may be

affected.

Therefore, may this research be giving them enlightenment of having limitation on

using internet to be not an Internet addict.

Parents

One of the best ways on preventing internet addiction is to be socially

interconnected to others. Moreover, may this research be an alarm to those parents to

care about the interpersonal health of their child, guard and guide them to a life away

from harmful usage of internet.

Teachers

Most of the teachers nowadays are also using technology as their teaching

medium. As teachers, may this research be their guide in teaching students the proper

way of using internet. All in all, teachers are great influencers to give awareness and

enlightenment about the possible effects of this problem and how can it be prevented.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

The use of the Internet grants its user great awareness of the importance of the

world around them. The internet is a platform for several types of information. Internet

usage will continually grow as long as its users not denied its easy access. Recent

statistics indicate that the internet gives people the option to access information site as

well as other sites such as social media sites, internet games, and cyber-sex. A study of

Ellore et al. on the influence of internet usage on academic performance and face to face

communication revealed that as a result of the availability of Internet, most students had

access to it on through their cell phones. This helps students to broaden their academic

knowledge.

Yesilyurt et al. showed that access to a home computer and internet connection

contributes to students’ academic performance as well as self-learning skills.

Considering access and usage of the internet by secondary students in Nigeria indicated

that most students believe the internet to be far better and convenient than their school

libraries. The study pointed out that students see the Internet as a source for general

knowledge, and it really helps them improve their reading habits leading to an

improvement in their academic performance. The students perceived the internet as a

supplement for learning and thus contribute to higher academic feat.

It has been recently reported that adolescents today spend a significant amount

of their time on the Internet for multiple purposes. Evidence abound that excessive

internet use has been associated with problems of maintaining daily routines, school

11
LITTLE CHILD JESUS CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

performance and family relationships. A study conducted by Bragdon and Dowler on

college students’ technology use and academic performance indicated that

upperclassmen spent significantly more time using technology for academic and work-

related purposes, whereas underclassmen spent more time using cell phones, online

chatting, and social networking.

According to Olatakun, a large proportion of secondary students in Nigeria had

been involved to some extend in using the Internet in their everyday lives for about four

to five years now. Similar activities have been identified by Samual in an attempt to

evaluate internet usage among secondary school students in public schools in Lagos

State. Evidence from Denizli on the effects of technological devices on student’s

academic success suggested that most students have been late in submitting their

assignments because they spend more time on social media instead of doing their

homework.
